December 8, 2006: Apocalypse Wow

I am so relieved. Last week, Dario Argento's Pelts provided a pivotal turning point in what I was starting to lament to be a disappointing Masters of Horror Season 2. After finding great satisfaction in maestro Argento's masterpiece, the big question for me was: Could the remaining masters keep this new momentum going, and would the second half of the season redeem the first? I had hoped so.Well, Joe Dante's The Screwfly Solution is now my second favorite episode of this season, stepping up pretty closely in line next to Pelts. Furthermore, Pelts and Screwfly Solution have now taken their places in my Top 5 favorite episodes of both seasons combined, and Screwfly is definitely the best sci-fi/horror gene-splicing of the lot. Actually, The Screwfly Solution is a far more sophisticated and significant work than many of the feature-length science fiction films I've seen over the years. Last season, Joe Dante had opted for politically challenging, sardonic horror with the zombie electio... read more

I have recently started ...

Question: I have recently started watching Love Monkey reruns on VH1 and have completely fallen in love with the show. (Tom Cavanagh rules!) I only wish I and about a million other people had started watching the show earlier so that we could all look forward to many seasons to come. My question: Oftentimes, such as with Love Monkey or My So-Called Life, other channels will pick up episodes and rerun them for the "cult" fans. Why can't these same channels actually produce new episodes for the show, knowing they already have a large fan base? Is it that difficult to obtain rights to a show that another network has already canceled? Answer: From what I've read of VH1's numbers for Love Monkey so far, I wouldn't overestimate how "large" that fan base is, though it certainly deserves one. The basic issue here is that cable networks like VH1 simply don't have the budget to produce costly new episodes of a sophisticated scripted drama (with A-list actors like Cavanagh, Judy Greer, Larenz Tate ... read more

Love Monkey Is anyone else totally...

Love MonkeyIs anyone else totally loving this kid Wayne's music? Tom perfectly described the young artist, played by real-life musician Teddy Geiger, as having "depth, soul, and I just couldn't get it out of my head." While Tom was trying to brainstorm ways to get Wayne's name out there, I was thinking, "Duh, MySpace.com," and sure enough, that was Tom's first idea. I could so write this show... even though I have yet to sign up for MySpace. And I definitely noticed Mike staring down the hot nanny's cleavage. Come on, your wife is seven months pregnant, for heaven's sake, and she's sitting right there! Well, I learned a new word tonight: "nannyaziation," which refers to the cultural phenomenon of cheating with the nanny. I'm really hoping read more

One-on-One with Love Monkey's Shooter

Larenz Tate, Love Monkey

In CBS' recently premiered Love Monkey (Tuesdays at 10 pm/ET), Ed alum Tom Cavanagh is flanked by a trio of buds, including Jason Priestley's dad-to-be, Mike, and Christopher Wiehl's onetime baseball stud, Jake. Rounding out the close-knit quartet is Shooter, played by Larenz Tate, with whom TVGuide.com went one-on-one in this Q&A.  TVGuide.com: Some have likened Love Monkey to Sex and the City, but with guys and music. In that scheme of things, who is Shooter — Samantha?Larenz Tate: Yeah, that's what everyone is saying. Our show clearly stands on its own, but if I had to compare, he'd be the read more

I loved, loved, loved Love ...

Question: I loved, loved, loved Love Monkey. How refreshing to see a show with such a great cast and fantastic chemistry. And then you add two of my favorites, Tom Cavanagh and Jason Priestley, and I'm in heaven. How many episodes can we expect to see this season, and what did you think of the show?
Answer: Check out my own enthusiastic review, which ran online and in the magazine, where we also published a Q&A with the charming Tom Cavanagh in the same issue. (Yes, this is a plug for my online readers to check out the magazine, which is chockful of newsy show-oriented features and items.) Eight episodes were commissioned for the show's initial order, which should take us into early March ... read more

American Idol Another season of...

American IdolAnother season of American Idol begins with double the twin action. Does anyone agree that two sets of male twins plus the small-town Barrettsmith sisters might be overkill in the family-drama department? It smells a touch gimmicky, but at least all the siblings can back it up with their voices. So can single-named diva Mandisa and Gina, the tongue-pierced, fishnet-wearing dental assistant who managed a decent Celine Dion vocal. But really, we don't tune in to see the true talents this early in the season. There will be plenty of time to see how they fare. No, the premiere episode is all about the truculent train wrecks, and Chicago was full of 'em. Here's a hint for future Idol wannabes: When the judges r read more

Love Monkey A bit of a disclaimer:...

Love MonkeyA bit of a disclaimer: I was more than a little bit biased watching this show. Ed is one of my favorite shows, I find Tom Cavanagh utterly adorable, and to top it all off, they tossed Jason Priestley into the mix. My lingering 90210 loyalties run pretty deep. So it isn't all that surprising that I adored the first episode of this new series, in spite of its ridiculous name. (Yeah, I get that he's trying to find love and swinging between trees — it is still just a bizarre title.) It combines elements of Jerry Maguire — Tom's boardroom speech about his love for music — and High Fidelity —  the music snobbery was running rampant with the merciless mocking of artists like Air Supply and Billy Joel.
