Experienced success early in her acting career, garnering Tony and Drama Desk awards in 1969 for her portrayal of Eleanor Bachman in The Great White Hope.
Reprised the role for the 1970 movie and was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
Was chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts from 1993 to 1997.
Wrote Command Performance: An Actress in the Theater of Politics, about her fight with the Newt Gingrich-led Republican Congress, which tried and failed to shut down the National Endowment for the Arts.
