James Stewart Fast Facts:
Lived with Henry Fonda in New York and Hollywood while they were struggling actors in the early '30s; the two remained lifelong friends despite their political differences.
Made film acting debut in
The Murder Man
(1934).
In the 1930s and 1940s, he was romantically linked to a bevy of leading ladies, including Norma Shearer, Ginger Rogers, Marlene Dietrich and Olivia de Havilland.
During World War II, he flew 20 missions over Germany as a combat pilot and rose from the rank of Private to Colonel. Received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and France's Croix de Guerre.
After the war, the first film he made was the classic
It's a Wonderful Life
(1946)
.
Was the first star to take a small up-front salary in exchange for a percentage of a film's profits (for
Winchester 73
)
in 1950.
Honored with a Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute in 1980.
