A unique and disturbing work, The Designated Mourner is the feature film version of the hugely successful play by Wallace Shawn which was first staged by David Hare at London?s Royal National Theatre with Mike Nichols (whose brilliant performance was the talk of the town) in the leading role of ?Jack.? The play has now been created anew for the screen by the same cast, writer, director and designer. Told almost entirely in direct address, the screenplay by Wallace Shawn is an astonishing tour-de-force, as enthralling as his earlier cult classic, My Dinner with Andr?? (written and performed with Andr?? Gregory). Directed by playwright/filmmaker David Hare, starring Miranda Richardson, David de Keyser and one of America?s most famous film directors, Mike Nichols, in his feature film acting debut, The Designated Mourner is a genuinely original, intimate, and compelling experience. watch

(1938, Aka QUEEN OF CRIME) Jack Hulbert, Genevieve Tobin, Noel Madison, Francis Sullivan, Arthur Wonter. In this great Edgar Wallace thriller, Hulbert is a slick policeman out to nab Tobin and her criminal gang. Watch for the great scene where her gang robs a bank in the black of the night only to find the building encircled by police. Later, the gang heists a train loaded with gold bullion. When the police pursue, the train seemingly vanishes into thin air! The action (all at night) leads to a little used siding and a deserted loading station. The editing during the action sequences is superb, adding to the thrilling nature of the goings-on. Tobin is wickedly delightful as Kate. Madison is at his sleazy best as one of her gunmen. The patter between Tobin and Hulbert is delightful. A grand film from start to finish. 16mm. watch
