Based on a short story, "Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy," by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Yentl is the story of a young Eastern European woman, who, very early in our century (pre-WWI), disguises herself as a boy in order to pursue her passion for studying the Torah. Yentl (Streisand) has no trouble passing for a boy as she pursues her studies, but when she falls in love with a fellow student (Mandy Patinkin) she cannot, of course, express her feelings. Circumstances of Jewish law force the "boy" Yentl to marry a girl (Amy Irving), but the concealment must continue and Yentl must invent reasons for a long-delayed "consumation" of the marriage. Finally, she reveals her secret to her bride, who, after a time of shock, accepts Yentl for what she is.

Oscar-nominated portrait of life, love and loss stars Tony-winner and Emmy-nominee Ron Silver ("Reversal of Fortune," "Blue Steel") as a haunted holocaust survivor living in 1949 New York whose simultaneous marriages to three women lead to tragi-comic results. Oscar-winner Anjelica Huston ("Prizzi's Honor") is his first wife, believed to be killed in a concentration camp, only to resurface to find her husband now married to their ex-servant. To further complicate matters, he is also married to his pregnant mistress (Golden Globe-nominee Lena Olin - "The Unbearable Lightness of Being"). Based on the novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer ("Yentl"), it earned Oscar nominations for Best Writing and brought nominations to both Huston and Olin for Best Supporting Actress. "...richly eccentric, jubilant and deeply skeptical all at once... in other words, a deeply, fully human work." - The Washington Post. "...beautifully realized...perfect cast." - Leonard Maltin.
