Maris uses Niles as a decoy to flee her murder trial. Martin finds an insurance payment in his pocket that he forgot to mail for Frasier months ago. Frasier panics when he realizes they cancelled his policy and his house is uninsured. Despite their disastrous date, he contacts Roz's unstable agent friend Ann Hodges. When Ann stops by to do an inspection, she slips on a glob of mayonnaise and breaks her leg. Fearing a lawsuit, Frasier goes out of his way to accommodate her and allows her to stay at his apartment while she recovers. After two days, Frasier is at his wits' end with the whiny, co-dependent, trumpet-playing houseguest; he flips when she declares she's staying another month. Desperate to get rid of her, Frasier books her on a cruise, but she interprets it as an act of love. He tries to play the game, but she finds a liability release and realizes his motives. Furious, she decides to sue. However, when Frasier begs and pleads, she is so turned off by his childish reaction that she signs the waiver. Meanwhile, Maris gets out on bail until her murder trial and has to wear an ankle-tracking device. To raise money for her defense, she arranges for her artwork to be auctioned off. Niles retrieves an embarrassing piece from their marriage that was painted of him as Pan--the Greek god of fornication. In a plot to flee the country, Maris plants a suicide letter, knowing Niles will run to stop her. Her tracking device, attached to the painting, leads the police straight to Niles. They take the painting as evidence, much to Niles' humiliation. The next day, Niles finds a note from Maris saying that she shipped herself in a crate to a private island.

A devious inventor kidnaps children and takes them to a fun-filled fantasy land.

At work, Frasier is always able to offer a witty response when he's asked for his opinion. But when asked if he thinks Niles and Maris are meant to be together, Frasier is stumped. Determined to give his brother a thoughtful answer to the question, Frasier decides to poll people closest to Niles and Maris to see if the Cranes should reconcile or stay apart. Ever the thorough professional, Frasier interviews everyone from Marta the maid, to Daphne, to Martin, to Eddie the dog. Unfortunately, every time Frasier hears a positive argument in favor of the couple's compatibility, he soon gets an equally persuasive argument against it. Before long, Frasier can't concentrate on anything but answering Niles's question. In f act, Frasier proceeds to r uin a date, leaving him to walk the s treets of Seattle all night, contemplating what he should tell Niles. Finally, Frasier ends up on Niles's doorstep in the wee hours of the morning and announces that Niles and Maris just aren't right for each other. But when he hears Maris stirring in Niles's bedroom, Frasier realizes that his advice will likely have little impact on his brother's decision.

Niles calls Frasier in a panic: Maris is missing! With the help of one of Martin's police buddies, Maris is found in New York on a shopping spree. Niles feels relieved until Frasier points out how inconsiderate it was of her to leave without telling Niles. When Maris returns, Niles gives her a piece of his mind. That night, Niles turns up at his brother's door, saying that Maris has kicked him out of the house, and that he will be staying at Frasier's until she calls to apologize. But when Maris finally does call, it's to tell Niles that she wants a divorce. After renting a bachelor pad, Niles bids a fond farewell to his house staff, only to receive word that Maris will take him back if he'll apologize. Niles asks his father for advice, and just when it looks like he's about to return to Maris, Niles grabs his car keys and leaves the house for good.
