Holly Marie Combs (Charmed), Brooke Burns (any number of short-live series, Drive not included) and Rochelle Aytes (Drive) have been cast in Mistresses, a Lifetime drama pilot based on a BBC series.Despite what "sordid" undertones its title might suggest (at least to me and/or Ashley Dupre), Mistresses is said to simply revolve around four women now in their thirties, who have been BFFs since college. With its Jan. 22 broadcast, WB's Charmed (Sundays at 8 pm/ET) — which premiered Oct. 7, 1998 — becomes the longest-running television series boasting all female leads, having bewitched viewers for more years than such estrogen-heavy fare as Laverne & Shirley, Designing Women and Sex and the City. To mark the milestone, TVGuide.com sat down with executive producer Brad Kern to assess the show's assets, assay the avidness of its fans and conjure up a peek at its future — no matter how (gulp!) finite it may be.

The task of bewitching TV viewers isn't always easy for the sexy sorceresses of Charmed. Take one scene in the seventh-season finale, when Holly Marie Combs, Rose McGowan and Alyssa Milano visited a vampiress' bat cave and zapped the hell out of her flock of flying critters. Those biting bats, of course, were courtesy of computerized special effects added in after the scene was shot.

"When we're all swatting at imaginary bats, it looks silly," Combs tells TVGuide.com, grinning. "There's no way to look cool doing that. It takes getting used to. You have to use your imagination and be very humble, because you are gonna look like an idiot, and you just have to accept the fact that, unfortunately, the more ridiculous you look, the more convincing it is on the screen."

Charmed Trio Avoids Fan "Outrage"

When WB unveiled its fall sked on Tuesday, the Frog net confirmed it had renewed Charmed for an eighth season.
