Holly Hunter: Is Grace on a Mission to Save Another?

Holly Hunter

This Monday at 9 pm/ET, TNT's Saving Grace resumes its second season, but since we last left off, so much has changed. Namely, Grace has a new partner — Abby Charles, played by guest-star Christina Ricci — while Butch is now paired with Ham, now that Bobby is undercover. Plus, Earl has new business for Grace to tend to, involving death row inmate Leon Cooley. (Oh, and a serial killer is on the loose, too.) Holly Hunter shared a look at the next batch of episodes.

TVGuide.com: There's a fair amount of upheaval being worked through in the squad room when the season resumes. Would you say that "change" is a big theme for what's ahead?
Holly Hunter: I would say that the theme of the entire series is Grace dealing with change. It's hard to ever nail it down to any one thing that she's dealing with. But these days, one thing she's dealing with is forgiveness. She's trying to come around to forgiving herself for things that she's done, for things that have happened in her life that she has blamed herself for.

TVGuide.com: I wasn't too impressed with her new partner, Abby Charles, at first — and neither is Grace. But I assume that changes soon enough?
Hunter: Oh, just wait and see ... read more

Reader's Jeer of the Week: Grace Under Fire

Holly Hunter by Jeff Riedel/TNT

From Jeanette Barnes in Olympia, Wash...Jeers to putting a program on like Saving Grace with a tramp in it. There are enough programs on like that already. And what is with all these women cops? It would have been much better to have Holly Hunter be a decent, clean person. Kids see enough of the trash that is on TV. Why not put something decent on for a change that we can all watch in the family together?• Share your own raves and rants about other shows on the Reader Cheers & Jeers discussion board.• We may feature your Cheer or Jeer on TVGuide.com or in TV Guide magazine! read more

Resolution on Series Premiere of Saving Grace

Saving Grace by Erik Heinila/TNT

Last season, we left off with Holly Hunter's tortured character with a gun pointed at Father "Satan" Murphy's head. Now the question is, "Will she go through with it? Will she kill the man who molested her as child?" Now what kind of people would we be if we went ahead and spoiled it for you? But since we're good sports about it, check out this sneak peek of what's to come on the season premiere tonight. Watch it now! | More online videos read more

SAG Goes Mad for Men

30 Rock's Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin by Mary Ellen Mathews/NBC Photo

I suppose I could dwell on the fact that a major Hollywood guild has once again ignored the very existence of TV's finest acting ensemble, Friday Night Lights — in favor of the mugging and posturing on Boston Legal. As they'd say on another SAG favorite, Grey's Anatomy: Seriously? Is it wrong to want to form our own picket line? Also: What's up with snubbing Pushing Daisies and its fantastical cast? And yet the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, announced Thursday morning, did shower love on my favorite new show of 2007, AMC's Mad Men, and its terrific star, Jon Hamm (who has just joined the cast of the remake of the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, which sounds appropriately robotic). So while not all may be forgiven, the wound stings a little less.My favorite part of the SAG Awards is the ensemble-cast category. Because let's face it, most great TV shows rely on cast chemistry. Even The Closer, which on face value looks like a vehi... read more

New Blood at the Globes

If the barometer of an interesting TV awards show is the number of fresh faces invited to the party, then the Golden Globe nominations (announced Thursday morning) passes the test. Not with a perfect score, mind you. Any institution that so completely ignores NBC's wonderful Friday Night Lights deserves some spirited jeering. And the Globes' addiction to sexy sizzle and hype can lead to some puzzling choices: Big Love, fun as it is, over The Sopranos' final season? Bill Paxton over James Gandolfini? (And if the Globes is going to shower love on Big Love, how could the women who play Bill's wives go unheralded, especially Ginnifer Goodwin?) Californication over Weeds? But let's look at the bright side. The Hollywood Foreign Press clearly spent some time checking out the TV landscape during last summer's remarkable season of cable breakthroughs. My own pick for No. 1 show of the year, AMC's Mad Men, is nominated for best drama, along with its dashing leading man, Jon Hamm. FX's Damages,... read more

I liked it when networks put ...

Question: I liked it when networks put a small logo, usually ghosted in the bottom right of the screen, so I knew what channel I was surfing to. But now the trend seems to be to have an entire billboard down there, and they are getting bigger and bigger! TNT and ABC Family seem to be the biggest offenders so far. I was watching Kyle XY and they had this huge promotion for new episodes of another show starting soon. I though it would go away after the first minute, but it stayed up there the entire time. I find it very distracting. I now tend to stay away from networks that have these "in your face" messages. Do you think there will be a point when shows will be half commercials? Answer: Don't give them any ideas. It's getting out of hand as it is. This is a new variation on one of my most frequently heard complaints. About the only part of the Emmy broadcast I enjoyed last Sunday was Lewis Black's rant against this practice. He spoke for millions, if my mail is any indication. That ... read more

Guardian Angel Rippy Is Full of Grace

Leon Rippy

It's not easy Saving Grace (tonight, 10 pm/ET, TNT). Just ask Leon Rippy, who plays Earl, the put-upon guardian angel of Holly Hunter's troubled detective. We spoke with the gregarious South Carolina native, now on hiatus after tonight's midseason finale, who discussed the hit drama's spiritual bent and the fate of his previous series, Deadwood. TV Guide: Do you believe in angels?Leon Rippy: I always have. We stepped out to L.A. in faith and still live by it. My wife has a wonderful parking prayer that opens up a parking space when need be. [Laughs]TV Guide: Why has the show struck a chord?Rippy: If you pass by any bar in the country, there are half a dozen Graces inside. Many are feeling they're past redemption, and if yo read more

I enjoyed TNT's The Company ...

Question: I enjoyed TNT's The Company and am currently catching up on ESPN's The Bronx Is Burning. My question is, why did TNT have to inundate its presentation of this otherwise serious program with crawling advertisements for other shows? I'm aware that I can also catch Saving Grace on TNT — the network takes every opportunity during the commercial breaks to let me know. Why do I need to see a miniature Holly Hunter walking around at the bottom of the screen during The Company? By comparison, ESPN, a network that arguably doesn't need to take itself as seriously, presents The Bronx Is Burning with only a small network logo in the corner of the screen. TNT had every reason to treat The Company with respect — the show was well executed on many levels. But even the failure to let the ending credits play uninterrupted for a few seconds got on my nerves. Decisions like these indicate that TNT was far more interested in using every imaginable opportunity to shove obnoxious ads down ... read more
