Roush Review: Not Happy With New Network Comedies

Elisha Cuthbert

It probably didn't help that I got an advance copy of this week's hilarious episode of Modern Family. But after laughing fairly continuously for an entire half-hour of farcical mayhem (involving Cam staging a middle-school musical), inspired innuendo (involving an ad Phil plasters on the sides of the family mini-van) and snark-tinged sentiment (involving a visit from Jay's brother), it was especially hard to muster much enthusiasm for the latest sitcom ...

Exclusive First Look: Nathan Fillion Lights It Up as Green Lantern

Green Lantern, Nathan Fillion

He's enjoying mainstream success as the star of ABC's Castle, but Nathan Fillion is still a fanboy favorite — and a fanboy himself. So the Firefly and Dr. Horrible alum totally geeked out when he was offered the voice role of DC Comics superhero Green Lantern in the DVD movie Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, due June 7 from Warner Bros. Animation. Emerald Knights is a series of vignettes about the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. Fillion plays Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern of Earth's space sector, who mentors Arisia, a new recruit played by Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss... read more

Buffy the Vampire Slayer still slays!

So it’s week two of my favoritest month of the year and the scary shows on DVD are keeping my player—and Pepito the Wonder Chihuahua—working overtime. And I know this column was supposed to be all about boorific B&W fare, but the vampires struck back over the weekend and there’s no denying these pains in the neck!Obviously, if we’re talking about bloodsuckers, there’s none better than Angel. BUT…that one we’re saving for the end of the month and a big old chat with a certain Whedonverse whiz kid we all know and love. (Hmmm, wonder who that could be?)Anyhoo, with David Boreanaz’s Angelus on hold, I say we give the love to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, since the show that gave us Angel continues to rock well beyond its own cancellation grave. Why, the uninitiated may ask? Three words, people. Best. Writing. Ever.If I’m lying, I’m undyin’. Honestly, there’s something spooky about how well the dialogue stands up, even four... read more

Tough-talker Henry Rollins Is Back, Keeping Things Israel

Henry Rollins

Talk shows have been around since the advent of television broadcasting, but there's never been one quite like The Henry Rollins Show. Provocative, confrontational and seemingly unable to pull his punches, Henry Rollins returns to the IFC this Friday, April 13 (at 11 pm/ET), to begin his second season, accompanied by guest Marilyn Manson. To mark the occasion, IFC is preceding the premiere at 9:30 with Henry Rollins: Uncut from Israel, a documentary chronicling the former rocker's trip to Tel Aviv for a spoken-word gig. Rollins recently gave TVGuide.com a piece of his mind. TVGuide.com: In Uncut from Israel, you say that Israel is "up against the real." Is that part read more

Rollins Rolls with the Punches

They say everyone's a critic. Rocker-turned-actor-turned-commentator Henry Rollins is just one more example of that. His new IFC series, Henry's Film Corner, airs the first Saturday of every month at midnight (and repeats endlessly, just in case you miss it). Rollins — who also hosts a talk-radio show in L.A. — rants and raves about current film releases. How did the outspoken guy land this latest gig? Must be his can-do attitude. "I've never taken an acting lesson in my life," he notes. "If someone says, 'Can you do a radio show?' 'Yes.' 'Can you act?' 'Oh, yeah.' I just B.S. my way right in. 'Can you float a movie-review show?' 'Yeah.' If it sucks, we'll know and I'll get canned and it will be over. Until then, if I think I can pull it off, I'm going for it." Rollins keeps mighty busy acting, hosting his radio show, supporting the troops in Iraq and planning to tour with his band. Why add the movie-reviewing task? "I used to park cars, read more
