Helio Castroneves Wins Third Indy 500

Helio Castroneves

Helio Castroneves won the Indianapolis 500 for the third time in his career Sunday.

The win serves as an exclamation point on the former Dancing with the Stars champ's recent acquittal of federal tax evasion charges that could have sent his career to the pits for good. A jury acquitted Castroneves of most of the charges against him last month, saving him from a six-year prison sentence. The remaining count was dismissed last Friday, according to The Associated Press.

"This is the best month of May ever," Castroneves said in tears after the race in Victory Lane. "Thank you for giving my life back," he said to his racing team owner Roger Penske during a hug.

With the win, Castroneves is one Indy win from joining racing elites A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears as the only to win the iconic race four times. Is breaking the record on Castroneves' mind?

Danica Patrick by Michael Hickey/WireImage.com, Helio Castroneves by Brian Spurlock/WireImage.com

Even before the cry of “Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines,” the 92nd Indianapolis 500 will be packed thick with excitement and story lines (Sunday, May 25, 1 pm/ET, ABC). The fiercest rivalry in open wheel racing is finally over as the sport’s two governing bodies have unified after 12 years. The hot new young guns with familiar names (Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal) will be motoring alongside Indy greats such as Tony Kanaan, Dan Wheldon, pole-sitter Scott Dixon and two-time Indy winner (and one-time Dancing With the Stars champ) Helio Castroneves. And yet all eyes watching the 33 sleek cars whipping around the most famous track in the U.S. will be trained on Danica Patrick. Last month, Patrick became the first female driver ever to win a big league motorsports event, and she loves Indy as much as the crowd loves her. ABC/ESPN analyst Scott Goodyear, himself an Indy great, likes Dixon (“I think he’s in a class by himself this year”), Catroneves... read more

Julianne Hough and Helio Castroneves, Dancing with the Stars

Oh, what a long, strange trip it's been — 37 cities, 250 costumes and more than 200,000 rhinestones. But finally, Sunday at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, it was time for the Dancing with the Stars tour to come to an end. "It's bittersweet but I'm happy to go home," Cheryl Burke said after she joined the cast and a few crew members for their final pre-performance cheer. "I'm going to miss everyone," added Edyta Sliwinska. "I'm just really excited to sleep in my own bed." But first there was a show to do. And what's a final show without a few surprises? The first non-scripted moment of the evening came when the entire crew joined the dancers on stage to dance the twist. Derek Hough was mid-move when he caught a glimpse of the crew, all dressed in black, doing the moves behind him and pointed out the impromptu dance party to his partner, who quickly burst into a smile. On Tour with Dancing with the Stars: Helio and Julianne Reunite

"Wow," says Helio Castroneves, getting his first look inside Indianapolis' massive Conseco Fieldhouse. The auditorium is home court to the Indiana Pacers and the place where Dancing with the Stars' Season 5 champ will return to the dance floor — for the first time in almost two months — in a matter of hours. It's the morning of Jan. 18, and the cavernous auditorium is a beehive of activity. The stage, T-shaped and almost as long as a basketball court, has a dance floor that reaches deep into an audience estimated at roughly 8,000. The production crew is doing its almost nightly magic act of setting up a complete theater: Workers scurry this way and that, unloading enormous crates that house everything from the bandstand to the dance floor itself. What do you do when you've missed the big cast party because ABC puts you on the red eye from Los Angeles to New York (to appear on Good Morning America) on the night you've won Dancing with the Stars? If you're two-time Indy 500 champ Helio Castroneves, you fly back into town and throw your own little Hollywood soiree (with the help of Brazilian rum-maker Leblon) at the swank Sunset Tower Hotel for about 100 friends from the cast and crew, including Sabrina Bryan, Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin. "I've been traveling so much that I want to make sure I enjoy [the victory]," says Castroneves, who was in Las Vegas yesterday for Floyd Mayweather's fight and has made numerous media appearances in the last 10 days in New York and Orlando. Castroneves' pro partner, two-time Dancing champ Julianne Hough, was on hand as well, looking gorgeous in a black-and-white cocktail dress. But she was also strangely pale after spending a week on vacation in Hawaii. "It read more
