More than 40 years before True Blood and Twilight made angst-ridden vampires the hot new thing, there was a wicked little afternoon soap called Dark Shadows. At its center was Barnabas Collins, a brooding bloodsucker played with equal parts torment and relish by Jonathan Frid, and if you were an offbeat kid in the late 1960s there's a good chance you raced home from school to watch it. Tim Burton, the acclaimed director, was one of those eager young fans. And now he's put his own spin on things. His movie version of Dark Shadows opens May 11 with a starry cast headed by Johnny Depp — yet another boyhood buff of the soap — as the reluctant, guilt-ridden and immortally sexy Barnabas.

Even if you've been taking this show for granted the last few years, or possibly decade, you don't want to miss — though you might want to record — the dazzling opening sequence, a kaleidoscopic montage showing the Simpsons' evolution from no-def to Hi-Def, with more couch gags than the eye and brain can process.

Alan Cumming is a perfect choice to host the 2011 Britannia Awards (Sunday at 8/7c on TV Guide Network). I mean, the man won a Tony Award for playing an emcee (for Cabaret in 1998)! Plus, the Scottish actor has other skills relevant to the gig — just ask him. "I'm a little bit cheeky and a little bit mischievous," he says. "I'm quite good on my feet."
It's a good thing too, because Cumming's packed schedule — including his ongoing gig on The Good Wife, which shoots in New York — made it difficult to find time to fly to Los Angeles to host the show, let alone prepare what he will say. "It kind of keeps me on my toes and kind of feels like doing theater without having to do a play for six months," he says. "I have no script yet, but I enjoy the last minute-ness of it."
