Principal patient at the Borough County Hospital is Francis Bigger (Frankie Howerd), a charlatan faith-healer who while on a village hall lecture tour falls from the platform and, contrary to the efficacy of his own methods of enjoying health and happiness, finds himself in a hospital bed. He joins a motley collection of fellow patients and finds too that the hospital itself is staffed by a far from normal team of doctors and nurses and supervised by a fearsome Matron (Hattie Jacques). It is only after a revolt by the patients who join forces in furthering the romance of a young doctor and an attractive nurse to the discomfiture of the senior staff that peace returns to the establishment... or does it? watch

The job's a cinch - Finisham Maternity Hospital has a giant stock of birth pills and all Sid and his gang, Cyril, Ernie and Freddy, have to do is steal them to make a fortune selling the haul.But first one of them has to get into the place and steal the hospital plans. And although he's far from keen on the idea, before he can say 'bra', Cyril totters into the hospital as a woman. The disguise is most effective. In fact, he's hardly had time to straighten his seams before he's being goosed by Prodd (Terry Scott) the groping gynaecologist and being mistaken for a new student nurse and checked into a nurse's quarters room with Nurse Susan Ball (Barbara Windsor). But if Cyril has problems, so has Finisham Hospital. Sir Bernard Cutting, (Kenneth Williams), chief surgeon and hypochondriac thinks he's changing sex and nothing Matron (Hattie Jacques) does can ease his mental turmoil.
