A record-setting 72 million votes were cast to determine which three American Idol singers would be become hometown heroes and which singer would, in the immortal words of Ryan Seacrest, "just be going home." But that poor, non-heroic person was a bit of a shock. So, who is headed home as the shame of his or her hometown? (Seriously, producers, let's not pretend that all of these kids aren't famous, OK? ) Let's find out...
It was a night of hot tempers and one very uncomfortable close encounter: James Durbin, who was less than thrilled at being man-handled by Lady Gaga.
Preparing at the recording ...
Wednesday's American Idol reminds us that this week's vote will decide which singers get to go "home as heroes." I personally think they'll all go home pretty famous, but I won't get into that now. In any case, to win those all-important votes, the singers must sing songs that inspire them before diving into the songbook of Leiber and Stoller, who wrote many hits in the post-World War II era. And who is the best person to guide the wannabes through that classic song book? Lady Gaga! Yeah, I don't get the connection either, but Gaga is in the house. So, who was the best? Let's find out....
Lady Gaga will mentor the remaining four American Idol finalists next week, Fox announced Friday.
Gaga will join Jimmy Iovine in the studio to help Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart prepare to sing songs by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Reinhart performed the singer's unreleased track "You and Me" on Wednesday.
American Idol, Casey Abrams
Why does American Idol's Casey Abrams think that so many people relate to him? Because he's a slacker
"A lot of people would come up to me and say, 'You remind me of my slacker son that dropped out of college.' That's exactly what I am — I like sleeping on couches, watching TV, eating cereal in the daytime," he tells TVGuide.com. "[I'm a] regular dude doing what he wants to do and I hope that inspired people to do this show and try other things.
Although American Idol has waited until the Top 4 to pair up the finalists for the last two seasons, but this year the remaining six finalists will duet on Carole King night, Entertainment Weekly reports. After weeks of Scotty sticking closely to his country roots and Jacob refusing to restrain himself on any of the high notes, it's about time these Idol hopefuls paired up and learned a little something from each other (especially since the judges remain so tight-lipped on giving any advice whatsoever). We provide our dream pairings and what the final six will hopefully take away from having to...
Jennifer Lopez, Bobby Flay
Many TV critics have already harped on the American Idol judges this season. Their refrain: J.Lo, Steven and Randy are nothing more than paid cheerleaders, incapable of criticism. In their eyes, all of the Top 13 contestants were winners, and their performances have deserved nothing worse than a "that was kind of pitchy."
American Idol: What do the girls need to do to survive?
We agree, and would like to offer some advice by pointing to lesser-seen TV competition America's Next Great Restaurant, the NBC show in which the winner gets to open a new fast-casual restaurant chain. Seems to us, the Idol panel could learn a lot from the show's four judges Curtis Stone, Bobby Flay, Lorena Garcia and Steve Ells.
It's taken five weeks, but the studio audience is finally starting to drop the "S" bomb: Simon. He was gone like a puff of black smoke. And in the hoopla surrounding the two new judges — glamour goddess Jennifer Lopez and rock god Steven Tyler — he was almost forgotten.
But that was before Pia Toscano was booted off the show, making it only to ninth place. And the fans, still touchy on the subject, are now trying to place blame. Eavesdrop on their conversations ...
Haley Reinhart, Lauren Alaina
The two remaining American Idol girls need to step up their game if they want to end the guys' winning streak. The last time a female won, fans were still waiting for the final Harry Potter book to hit shelves and Bob Barker was still hosting The Price Is Right.
But after only four female wins in the show's past nine seasons (including hugely successful alums Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood), the men have dominated the last four seasons, including the current one. With only two women left and seven weeks to go...
Record-company executive Jimmy Iovine may be getting the lion's share of the credit for working with American Idol's Season 10 contestants. But the singers revealed after the show Wednesday nigh there is another music-industry heavyweight who's been coaching behind the scenes: Jennifer Lopez's husband, Marc Anthony.
"A lot of the struggle that had been going on in prior performances was that we hadn't adjusted to the 'In Ears,'" says Naima Adedapo, referring to the custom-made earpieces that singers often use to balance out sound levels when they're singing with a live band on a big stage...
