  • Began his Hollywood career as an extra in westerns, after having lived as an Alaskan gold prospector and mule skinner during his teens.
  • Founded several production companies, including Hal Roach Studios.
  • Among his brainchildren was the Our Gang series, featuring the Little Rascals; his company also produced the Laurel and Hardy comedies and the feature film Of Mice and Men (1940).
  • During World War II, his studio was devoted to making military training films, some of which featured future Commander in Chief Ronald Reagan.
  • Post-war, became the first major producer to concentrate on creating for television, producing My Little Margie, Amos 'n' Andy, Topper and The Abbott and Costello Show, among others.
  • Remained at the forefront of the evolving entertainment industry through the 1980s, involving himself in the home-movie distribution of his films.
