Earned a varsity letter in rowing at the University of California.
Worked as a thrill-ride barker at the World's Fair and as a tour guide at Rockefeller Center prior to landing acting jobs in New York.
A back injury suffered during a dance class at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse made him ineligible for military service during WWII.
Along with with Mel Ferrer and Dorothy Malone, he cofounded the La Jolla Playhouse in his hometown in 1947.
His To Kill a Mockingbird character Atticus Finch was chosen as the Top Film Hero of the Last 100 Years by the American Film Institute in 2003.
Was a three-term president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969.
