Bombs Away on Heroes and 24

There’s a reason Heroes gets first billing over 24 this week in describing Monday’s explosive episodes of these head-to-head thrillers. (In one, a man-made bomb went off. In the other, a man WAS the bomb, and he set off a firestorm of plot complications.) Simply put, Heroes blew 24 away in what was easily the freshman fantasy’s finest, most sensationally entertaining episode. It was one of those turning-point, game-changing episodes that could launch an already successful show to the top tier of can’t-miss TV (a status some bestowed on Heroes even before it hit its recent stride). Not that 24 was playing dead. But even detonating the bomb in an assassination attempt against President Not-David Palmer wasn’t enough to rouse this show from its midday stupor. (Spoiler alert: According to the previews, it looks like the blast was effective enough to take Wayne out of commission long enough for Vice President Cy Tolliver McEvil to take charge for a while.) What a ... read more

What the heck is going on ...

Question: What the heck is going on with Chloe on 24? I'm loving the show this season, but for a second-billed character, she isn't doing very much. Got any scoop on what's coming up for her?

Answer: Well, she won't be tasering any annoying drunkards, if that's what you mean. She will, however, begin to suspect that (Spoiler alert) Morris (a recovering alcoholic) is back on the sauce, and she'll be forced to cover for him when he starts shirking his CTU duties. She's also going to have a funny exchange with Gregory Itzin when the ex-prez winds up in a waiting room at CTU.

It's Official: 24 Brings Back Two Faves

Fox's 24 has officially announced that Season 5 villain-in-chief Gregory Itzin and his firecracker first lady Jean Smart will resurface during Jack's next very bad day. While no details were divulged about the Emmy-nominated couple's encore, save that they are both recurring gigs, I invite you to read what Itzin told Ausiello back in September about his Season 6 return. read more

My Emmy Predictions!

Yes, this year's Emmy nominations make about as much sense as Desperate Housewives' Betty Applegate mystery. Chris Meloni instead of Hugh Laurie? Allison Janney instead of Edie Falco? Stockard Channing instead of Lauren Graham? Alfre Woodard instead of... anyone? But a funny thing happened after I worked through my anger, frustration and general sense of hopelessness: I took another look at the list and discovered, much to my surprise, that members of the blue-ribbon panel weren't completely stoned when they made their selections. Lost amid all the head-scratchers are some truly worthy nominees. In other words, this year's race is salvageable — provided, of course, that the right people win. Who are these "right people" I speak of? They're listed below, followed by my predictions for who will take home the gold on Aug. 27. Feel free to crib the info for your office pool. Not to boast, but history has proven that I'm usually spot-on about this stuff.OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES Grey... read more

Are you at all surprised that ...

Question: Are you at all surprised that John Spencer didn't receive a posthumous Emmy nomination for his work on The West Wing? I thought his death would earn him a nod at least in an honorary sense. But given the condition of the current system, I cannot say that I am completely surprised. Answer: It is surprising, but really, with this year's nominations, where do you start and where do you end? Truthfully, and with all sincere respect to the terrific and much-lamented John Spencer, this was not Leo's greatest season on the show, and I think the nomination in that category for Alan Alda was more appropriate. A sentimental nomination for an actor taken from us too soon is without doubt the sort of thing you'd expect from a conservative group like the Emmy voters, so it is kind of jarring. But overall, this is one of the more interesting, eclectic categories this year, and just having Gregory Itzin (24's President Logan) in the running is very satisfying. (He's my pick over Alda, read more

Six of one, half dozen of the ...

Hugh Laurie, House

Question: Six of one, half dozen of the other, huh? So much for the "improved" Emmy nomination process. It seems that just as many glaring omissions were made this time around as before, just different ones. Now, rather than the overlooked performers from small shows getting shafted, the respected stars from equally respected shows got the pie in the face. How any panel of humans viewing televised programming could find five more deserving fellow Homo sapiens than Hugh Laurie in the best-lead-actor category boggles the mind. Yes, Denis Leary, Gregory Itzin and Jean Smart got welcome nods, but the rest? Sheesh! No James Gandolfini or Edie Falco, but Martin Sheen and Geena Davis? No Jason Bateman or Lauren Graham, but Kevin James and Sto read more
