A washed-up ballplayer is put in charge of a pack of kids scarcely more mature than himself in this remake of the 1976 comedy hit. Morris Buttermaker (Billy Bob Thornton) is a former major league baseball player whose career and life has hit the skids thanks to his overwhelming fondness for booze and women. Needing a break, his lawyer (Marcia Gay Harden) arranges for Buttermaker to take on coaching responsibilities for the Bears, a Little League baseball team comprised of a handful of hapless losers. As Buttermaker tries to groom his young charges into a winning team, he also gives them a glimpse of his hard-living lifestyle while they gear up to take on perennial rivals the Yankees and their arrogant Coach Bullock (Greg Kinnear. Emerging from the field of this season's competitors as the best" of New York, Ian McGillivary "Cutless" (Brooklyn), Jonathan Maladano"Jonny Mal" (Manhattan), McArthur Simon "BGB"(Queens), and Rashard Leverett "Boomshard"(Bronx) kick off a freestyle battle to determine which pairs will go head-to-head in Round 2. After the round, Wilmer gives stand-out Rashard Leverett "Boomshard" (Bronx) the right to challenge any competitor. Leverett calls out Ian McGillivary "Cutless" (Brooklyn), leaving Jonathan Maladano "Jonny Mal" (Manhattan) to take on "BGB" (Queens). A frustrating day for Abby gets even worse when she receives an upsetting letter from Carter, who is still in the Congo. Her fellow nurses protest work conditions, and her opinions are ignored. Abby is chastised for trying to inform a teenaged girl, Ellie (STEPHANIE LINEBURG), whose heart and lungs are failing, that Ellie's life is in grave danger. Meanwhile, Romano's mood gets nastier when he tries on a prosthesis with an antiquated hook to replace his missing arm. Enraged, he terminates several much-needed nurses.
