The Emmys: Who Will Win — And Who Deserves It

This is a particularly difficult year to divine which way the Emmy winds will blow — toward past favorites or strong new drama and comedy contenders. Critic's Guide to Wednesday TV: Damages Ends, X Collides With Voice

Dark and twisty from start to finish, the legal thriller Damages doesn't quite deliver on its season-long promise to give bloodthirsty rivals Patty Hewes and Ellen Parsons the courtroom showdown many fans have long awaited. Which doesn't mean tonight's series finale (DirecTV's Audience Network, 9/8c) is short on fireworks between Glenn Close (a two-time Emmy winner as Patty) and Rose Byrne, who by the time the various convoluted plot strands play out, conclude "we both have plenty of blood on our hands."

Bloody, yes, if at times a bit... read more

Mega Buzz: Bones' Resentment, Grey's Romance and an NCIS Showdown

Will Booth and Brennan be fighting in the Bones premiere? — Mary
ADAM:
Although Booth takes a few verbal jabs in the premiere, you won't really begin to see his true emotions come out right away. "I think the initial reaction is relief and gratitude that [Brennan and Baby Christine] are fine," executive producer Stephen Nathan tells us. "The second episode is where [Booth] realizes he resents this person, that he's angry at her." But Nathan hints that Brennan's got some issues of her own. "Brennan has lived her entire life quite independently," Nathan says. "She's realizing for the first time that she's terribly interconnected with Booth... and this kind of shakes the foundation of who she feels she's been all these years. [She may] resent the fact that she gave herself over to another person."

Thanks for the Meredith scoop, but do you know anything about MerDer on the upcoming season of Grey's Anatomy? — Rachel

Matt's Guide to Wednesday TV: Football, Dancing, Damages and Bogie-Bacall Magic

When the ratings for tonight's TV are tabulated on Thursday, there's little doubt what will top the charts — and it won't be the doings in Charlotte on the second night of the Democratic National Convention. (It won't be Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, either, for which civilization can breathe a sigh of relief.)

One of TV's biggest draws returns with the official NFL Kickoff 2012 on NBC (coverage starts at 7:30/6:30c), with the opening game of the season a rematch of the Giants and Cowboys. read more

Damages Premiere: Did That Really Just Happen?

[WARNING: The following story contains spoilers from the Season 5 premiere of Damages. Read at your own risk.]

Damages has never been afraid of kicking off its seasons with provocative images, but the flash-forward featured in the legal drama's fifth and final season premiere might just take the cake.

Damages final season: It's Patty vs. Ellen — who will win?

The premiere saw Ellen (Rose Byrne) agree to represent Internet mogul Channing McClaren (Ryan Phillippe), whose Wikileaks-like website came under fire when the identity of Naomi Walling (Jenna Elfman), one of the site's whistle-blowing sources, became public... read more

Damages, Hit & Miss: A Direct Pipeline to Provocative Drama

Mamma mia — or should we say Mommy Fiercest? You do not want to mess with the ruthlessly cunning and downright lethal women ruling the roost on DirecTV's wild new Wednesday drama combo.

One of these formidable she-beasts is very familiar: Emmy winner Glenn Close as barracuda lawyer Patty Hewes in the fifth and final season of Damages, juggling one last timely high-profile lawsuit with a personally and emotionally charged custody case involving her granddaughter. The other is someone I guarantee you've never seen the likes of before: Big Love's alluring Chloe Sevigny starring in the gripping British import Hit & Miss as the enigmatic Mia, a brutally efficient assassin-for-hire whose complicated life as a transgender woman still in transition is further upended when she learns she fathered a son 11 years ago. (Damages premieres Wednesday at 9/8c, Hit & Miss at 10/9c, on DirecTV's Audience Network.)
