Critic's Notebook: Checking In On Flash, Jane, Forever, Sons

One of the trickier aspects of reviewing TV during a new fall season is judging series based solely on their pilot episodes. It's better to have more in advance, but not always an option. So while I was pleasantly surprised that two of my favorite new shows, The Flash and Jane the Virgin, were on The CW, I was also a bit nervous that they might not be able to sustain.

Review: Not-So-Plain Jane the Virgin

Bless the TV gods for bestowing upon this mostly mediocre fall season the year's most promising new rising star and most instantly adorable new character: Gina Rodriguez as Jane Villanueva, a good girl in an impossible situation. The CW's Jane the Virgin (Mondays, 9/8c) is an infectiously enjoyable confection of outlandish telenovela-inspired soap opera (think Ugly Betty) grounded in lovably fractious family dynamics (think a Latina Gilmore Girls — and how Jane would have been welcomed on the still-sorely-missed WB network).

Fall TV Editors' Picks: Why Jane the Virgin's Gina Rodriguez Is the Most Inspiring Young Actress on TV Today

Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez might just be the most refreshing — and inspiring — actress on television today.

"People [are] like, 'Oh the title, what could this be? This seems ridiculous!' But there are a lot of things in life that are unrealistic and then they actually end up happening," she tells TVGuide.com. "And don't tell me your life is not a telenovela! So I think it's about waiting and letting people make a decision on their own and not base it on a breakdown or a synopsis, which to me is still a fun synopsis. I'm always about something that's controversial or a little different."

Critic's Notebook: The CW at TCA

The broader the better. Give it to The CW, the little network that could be forgiven for having had a Rodney Dangerfield complex in past seasons, as it enjoys a rare moment of critical goodwill. You'd almost think we were back in the glory days of The WB — whose sole remaining remnant on the current slate is Supernatural, which brought its stars out for a 10th-season victory lap. Though The CW is only launching two new shows this fall (in October), they're two of the very best... read more
