Fritz Lang Fast Facts:

Fought in World War I with the Austrian army; was wounded four times and spent a year recovering in a Vienna hospital, where he began writing short stories and screenplays.
Directed the 1927 classic Metropolis, which is hailed as a masterpiece, but stated in an interview with Peter Bogdanovich that he personally hated the film.
Claims he invented the countdown for rocket launches, which he used in the 1929 movie Woman in the Moon.
Directed Germany's first sound film, the classic M, about a serial child murderer.
Came to the U.S. in 1936 and became a naturalized citizen.
Was known as "the man with the monocle" and the "Master of Darkness."
