Thursday TV in Review: Touch, Awake, Community, Archer

David Mazouz, Kiefer Sutherland

Anyone who thinks TV isn't trying hard enough to raise the bar this midseason should check out tonight's most distinctive shows. With the official series launch of Fox's fantastical Touch (9/8c) and another fascinating episode of NBC's mystifying Awake (10/9c), I imagine some will maintain that they may be trying a little too hard.

It's probably fair to wonder if Fox is touched in the head for going forward with a show as out-there as Touch. This hasn't been an easy time for truly offbeat shows to gain traction, as risk-takers including Smash, The River and Awake have struggled in the ratings, with critics eager to point out their obvious flaws while often undervaluing the ambition it took to put ...

Fall TV Report Card: How Is the New Class Doing?

Last Man Standing, Homeland, The X Factor

So many new shows, so little time! With a handful of fall TV casualties already — RIP Charlie's Angels, Playboy Club, Free Agents, How to Be a Gentleman and H8R (and it's not looking too good for Prime Suspect or Man Up either) — it's time to assess what's worth keeping on your DVR, and what you can safely skip.

For now, we're high on American Horror Story, a spooky mash-up unlike anything else on TV, and Homeland, a twisty thriller anchored by two riveting performances. We're cautiously optimistic about Suburgatory, for those who miss Gilmore Girls, but then there are the shows we're thisclose to ditching...

Watch My Show: Allen Gregory's David Goodman Answers Our Showrunner Survey

Allen Gregory

Put the mind of Jonah Hill together with Family Guy alum David Goodman, and you're bound to come up with something that teeters close to the edge. That's Fox's Allen Gregory, the new animated comedy starring Hill as the voice of a 7-year-old who's wise and sophisticated beyond his years but desperately lacking a moral compass or any social skills.

French Stewart stars as Allen Gregory's equally self-involved ...

French Stewart Soaps Up for Days of Our Lives

French Stewart

Warning: This performance may contain a trace of nut. When Days of Our Lives needed someone to play the funeral director at a pet cemetery, they handed the part to French Stewart. French Stewart Makes Like Clark Griswold for ABC

French Stewart by Jesse Grant/WireImage.com

French Stewart (Third Rock from the Sun) and Rebecca McFarland (The Dresden Files) will make like Clark and Ellen Griswold in Happy Campers, an ABC Family pilot about a family on a cross-country road trip. According to the Reporter, the pilot, which starts shooting Monday, features Kay Panabaker (Summerland), Alessandra Toressani, and Ryan Malgarini and the kids, as well as Beth Littleford (The Daily Show) as Stewart's ex-wife. (It must be a really, really big family truckster.) read more

"Round File"

This was a sweet (as in, "Awww") episode of TNT's The Closer, with the aging police-beat reporter hunting down one last story. It also served as an easy "transition back in" for Gabriel, though I was surprised we weren't privy to a case while he was away. Maybe no sense in punishing the actor for the character's trespasses? Nice moment when Brenda called out for the MIA Gabriel, creating awkward looks amid the PHDers. It was a decent mystery, too. Surely the casting of Mrs. McCluskey as the head nurse was to make us view her askew. The manager being the culprit, though, seemed a bit expected and his "defense" a tad pat — especially for a mere $2,500 a pop (or "ma," as the case may be).Was I the only one who at a midpoint, once the home's financials came to light, began to suspect that Gary Who Never Lies (French Stewart, as sinewy as ever) would be dovetailed into this case as some sort of "supplier" of cash-rich retirees? That'd have been a stretch, though, especially so close ... read more

In the Works: Chris Kattan Is Dreadful

SNL alum Chris Kattan and 3rd Rock's French Stewart are lending their pipes to Two Dreadful Children, the new cartoon comedy being developed at Fox, says the Hollywood Reporter. They will voice neighbors of a redneck family boasting a set of horribly disobedient, genius twins.... The gay-friendly pay network Here! has bought rights to The DL Chronicles, an anthology series about "men of color who lead double sex lives," aka are "on the down low," says Variety. read more
