  • January 11, 2007: A House Divided | ER | 1/12/2007
In one of his well-known speeches, Abraham Lincoln declared that “a house divided against itself cannot stand” — a sentiment echoed in tonight’s episode title and story lines. And boy, all of our favorite ER docs and nurses were definitely facing some sort of domestic or personal turmoil that spilled over into the workplace. And isn’t that just the way we like it? But first (how very Julie Chen of me), let’s start at the ending. I nearly jumped off my couch when Forest Whitaker turned up in that apartment. Talk about a bad day. After a shift-long snipe fest with Luka, Abby has to say goodbye to her friend and mentor Kerry (more on that later), then finds out that mystery patient Eddie (Fred Ward) is actually her long-lost father (we’ll also come back to that one) and ends her day by coming home with her infant son to an over-the-edge stalker. It certainly puts my “it’s 11 pm and we are out of milk” crisis into perspective.Though no... read more
  • November 16, 2006: Reason to Believe | ER | 11/17/2006
Tonight’s episode was directed by Ernest Dickerson, who is best known for his work as a cinematographer on a number of Spike Lee films including Malcolm X, Jungle Fever and Do the Right Thing. (This is his third directing stint for ER, having worked on two episodes in 2005.) Mr. Dickerson definitely crafted an edgier, more intense episode than we’ve seen in recent weeks, with cases that were compelling and polarizing.Tensions were running high on many fronts. Luka and Abby faced off over a possible spousal-abuse case and ran up against their complicated work relationship as he reminded her of her place in the pecking order. “Let’s try this. You be the resident, I’ll be the attending, OK?” Ouch. Of course, his callousness was likely the result of his agitation over the package he received from Curtis Ames. When he pulled the cop aside to ask for his help, his fear for his family was palpable.Fred Ward has been popping up all over my favorite hospital... read more
  • October 12, 2006: What I Am | Grey's Anatomy | 10/13/2006
The very best episodes of Grey's Anatomy make you laugh and cry all at once, and this was one of those. Seconds after I was crying while watching Izzie listen to Denny's phone message to his parents, I laughed out loud at Callie propositioning McSteamy. All together now: Shut up! Mark Sloan aka McSteamy to Callie: "Can I buy you a drink?" Callie: "Only if you have it delivered to my hotel room," as she walks out of the bar, then turns around all sexy: "You comin'?" You go, girl! She breaks it off with George and then seduces... McSteamy. Can we say "upgrade" much? Only on television, but I'll allow it.Nice way to have McSteamy enter the hospital — having everyone gaze over and give off all sorts of different vibes ranging from shock to anger to excitement. Oh yes — be sure to pick up the latest copy of TV Guide magazine since new series regular Eric Dane is gracing the cover. Fall TV Hot List issue, people — run, don't walk! Speaking of hot, can we talk about the... read more
