Feeling Lost? Here's Our Guide to Kate Austen

Evangeline Lilly as Lost's Kate

Our favorite castaways thus far have been on the island a few months, but for Lost fans, it's been more than 260 days since Jack's super-freaky flash-forward. As the Jan. 31 season premiere (finally) draws closer, TVGuide.com is offering daily profiles — "refreshers," if you will — of the key players in ABC's island-based odyssey.

Kate, by the "Numbers": Raised in rural Iowa, Kate (Evangeline Lilly) learned that Wayne, the alcoholic and abusive man dating her mother, Diane, was actually her biological father. Hoping to ease her mother's pain, Kate rigged the house to blow up, with Wayne in it, so Diane could get the insurance money. Now a fugitive, it became a cat-and-mouse game across the country with determined U.S. Marshal Mars on her tail. T read more

Way to End a Season (Lost, Not Idol)

Matthew Fox in Lost by Bob D'Amico/ABC

Now that's what it's like to sit on the edge of your seat for two hours. And no, I'm not talking about the endless end of American Idol, whose final episode Wednesday couldn't have been less concerned with crowning a winner, which came several minutes past the 10 pm point on the East Coast, as something of an afterthought. (Pity anyone who taped it and didn’t record it past the two-hour mark. They’d have missed the coronation.) Guess that’s what happens when there’s no suspense. From the moment Jordin Sparks sang this year’s schmaltzy Idol ballad Tuesday night with a catch in her throat, it was preordained that the 17-year-old with the grown-up pipes would win. (I did my part on the phone Tuesday night to make it happen.) Not bad, though, as variety shows go. And I’ll say this about the Idol finale: Tony Bennett sure knows how to stop a show, pure and simple. Forget idols. He’s a living legend. If you wanted surprise and suspense on Wednesday, the f... read more

Five Things You Need to Know About Lost's Return

Josh Holloway and Evangeline Lilly, Lost

Remember? Kate and Sawyer got down to business in the fish-biscuit cage. Big Bad Ben promised to let Dr. Jack leave the island in exchange for some lifesaving surgery. But Jack rediscovered his spine and threatened to let the smug Other die unless Kate was allowed to do what she does best: run. It's been nearly three months since we've gotten Lost. But starting this Wednesday, ABC's eternally trippy hit returns with fresh episodes every! single! week! through May (at the new hour of 10 pm/ET). Here's a sneak peek at what you'll be buzzing about on Thursday mornings. (Stop reading now if spoilers aren't your thing. Seriously.) 1. The Sawyer/Kate/Jack love triangle isn't over yet. Kate seemingly chose the charismatic con man over the honorable doc when she hooked up with Sawyer in the Nov. 8 fall finale, a move that pleased both fans and Sawyer himself ( read more

My "News Year" Resolutions

While never one to set any personal-betterment goals, that does not preclude me from aspiring to amp up my performance as TVGuide.com's news blogger (Today's News: Our Take) and the domineering-yet-amiable overlord of the Interviews & Features column. Henceforth and herewith, thusly, I present my News Year resolutions, to which I refuse to be held accountable 364 days from now:— To finally land that (conspicuously) elusive interview with Alyson Hannigan, the only How I Met Your Mother cast member yet to indulge me in a fun Q&A. Is she afraid I will ask some lame, "When is Buffy returning?" question? Don't be, Alyson. Just call.— To resolve the question of whether a "blast" e-mail from an actor-friend's BFF is "for print," because right now I'm sitting on a huge piece of celebrity engagement news. Hellllppp!— To get to the bottom of the deepening "streaming Day Break episodes gone missing at ABC.com" mystery. Right now, I suspect that Vinnie Terranova's hand... read more

Lost Star's Home Destroyed by Fire

The Kailua house that Golden Globe nominee Evangeline Lilly calls home while lensing Lost was consumed by a fire early Wednesday morning, says the Honolulu Advertiser. As of 6:45 am Hawaii time, firefighters had doused the flames but had not yet been able to enter the house. Per the Advertiser, there are no reports of anybody being inside at the time of the fire. UPDATE: The fire, which burned for at least a half hour before a team of five fire trucks was able to quell it, left Lilly's home a total loss, says the Advertiser. Lilly, who rents the place with two female roomates, was likely filming at a Waialua beach at the time of the tragedy. (You can read a description of the cozy bungalow in this article in Elle magazine, in which she claimed to have furnished her living room for $300.) The cast of Lost is scheduled to break for Christmas on Thursday. read more
