Episode Recaps: "Joy in a Bubble" and "Stole an RV"

My Name Is Earl delivered the goods again this week with a full hour comprised of two all-new episodes The first one featured Earl Jason Lee trying to cross 72 off his list by bringing Joy a hot tub to make up for one he accidentally prevented her from earning years ago I hope everyone already knew that lighters and hairspray dont mix And whats the usual high point of any Joy-centric episode Jaime Pressly of course For the first time ever youve satisfied me in a way Darnell never could Joy utters to Earl after he gives her the hot tub Understandably he leaves out the part about picking up the gift off the side of a road after finding a bum living inside of it Blissfully unaware Joy begins living it up as only she can spending day and night soaking in the questionable spa and indulging in Old British 40s while keeping pickles on her eyes Her life of luxury ends pretty abruptly though when she finds her big toe has become well a bi read more

"The Magic Hour"

My Name Is Earl broke ground on Season 4 in style with two back-to-back episodes With last seasons storylines left in the dust getting back to the shows roots was nothing less than a breath of fresh air After an hour filled with some of the funniest new TV moments Ive seen in a while I couldnt ask for more but I wanted to anyway In the first installment Earl Jason Lee recalls having once ruined Buddy Zaks wish from the Make-A-Wish Foundation when he was just a boy himself When he sets off to make it up to Buddys mother he finds Buddy still alive and all grown up A film enthusiast Buddy asks Earl to produce his dream movie in exchange for crossing him off of the list However the only available actors are Camden Countys usual cast of clowns It also doesnt help that the film 2 The Max is ridiculous Seth Green brings on the funny in the role of Buddy and looks like hes enjoying every minute of it With all of his recent work in animation Family Guy Ro read more

"Midnight Bun"

Tonights continuation episode was well worth the wait pulling out all the stops in the laugh department What better way to get the ball rolling than having that tongue-in-cheek action-packed recap bring us back up to speed It kind of reminded me of all those internet movie trailer mash-ups that are so plentiful these days but of course with much better editing What followed was one of the most rapid-fire Earl episodes Ive seen in a while hitting all the right nuances of the plot cramming it with humor and not wasting a second If I had an MVP award to hand out it would undoubtedly go to Ethan Suplee Its interesting that Randy the simpleton of the bunch somehow consistently emerges as the most multi-faceted character of the show Last week we saw his vindictive side and this time he showed a sad introspective side I couldnt help finding the crying Im-not-good-at-anything scene quite touching albeit in a funny this-is-a-comedy-show kind of way Im glad that read more

Ethan Suplee Offers a Whiff of My Name Is Earl Scoop

Ethan Suplee with Jason Lee, My Name Is Earl

Outside of the occasional threats from vengeful ex-cons and Joy, Randy's had a pretty easy life as his brother's sidekick on My Name Is Earl. But in tonight's special "Laugh 'N Sniff" episode (8 pm/ET on NBC), the Hickeys have to suck it up and get [Gasp] real jobs. It's a good thing Ethan Suplee has grown up a little faster than his character: The 30-year-old and his wife, Brandi Lewis, just welcomed their second daughter, Billie Grace, who joins 2-year-old Frances Clementine and stepdaughters Lily (9) and Bella (10). TVGuide.com spoke to Suplee about Earl's evolution, how the show actually helps him be a better parent, and how he risked his very well-being for this week's scent-sational episode. TVGuide.com: Hi, Ethan. Congratulations! The last time I talked to you was in the fall. Now, looking back, do you have a favo read more

The Secrets Behind My Name Is Earl's Animated Outing!

My Name Is Earl

This week's My Name Is Earl (Thursdays at 8 pm/ET, on NBC) isn't just super-sized, at 40 minutes long, and it doesn't just guest-star film vet Christian Slater. No, on top of all that, the outing presents Earl, Joy, et al, like you've never seen them before, when a visit to an earthy commune sends Randy trippin' into a foam-animated alternate Earliverse. Ethan Suplee, who plays Earl's bro, offered TVGuide.com a sneak peek. TVGuide.com: What was your reaction when you first heard about this "foamation" technique they'd be using for the Nov. 16 episode?Ethan Suplee: [Series creator] Greg Garcia had actually talked to me about it around the beginning of read more

Wow. What a disaster. Way too ...

Question: Wow. What a disaster. Way too much Will & Grace and The West Wing (and I am a big fan of The West Wing). No Lost? No Battlestar Galactica? But to me the big kicker is the lack of Jason Lee and Ethan Suplee. Did no one watch My Name Is Earl? I'm happy for Jaime Pressly, but Lee and Suplee are the reasons that show should have been nominated for best comedy. Answer: The omission of Earl and its hilarious male stars was one of the bigger and unhappier shocks to me as well. I thought it was a shoo-in ... read more

I can't seem to make up my ...

Question: I can't seem to make up my mind between two "randy" TV gentlemen. Specifically, My Name Is Earl's not-too-bright brother Randy or Captain Stottlemeyer's not-too-bright lieutenant, Randy Disher, on Monk. Ethan Suplee gives Randy a child's innocence and enthusiasm complete with a wonderful twinkle in his eye. Plus the way he carries a not-too-subtle torch for Catalina gives an uncharacteristically warm and gentle subplot in contrast to Joy's white-trash screeching at poor Crab Man. On the other hand, Jason Gray-Stanford's Disher is a top utility character who consistently improves a scene while running the gamut of emotions. He can go from cocky to insecure in a heartbeat and be equally convincing, not to mention his great comic delivery. He's a nerdish underdog and I love his underplayed crushes on Monk's assistants. I'd also love to see both men receive more attention as second bananas, but if you had to choose, which Randy would you single out for a possible Emmy nomination? read more

Is "Bumped Joey" Now on Earl's List?

My Name Is Earl's Jason Lee

Tonight, Earl Hickey claims that which is rightly his: a berth on NBC's Must-See TV slate, as the freshman hit My Name Is Earl relocates from Tuesday to Thursday at 9 pm/ET, where it will be followed by the equally worthy tagalong The Office. The shake-up also shuffles Will & Grace to the 8 o'clock slot, begging the question — and TVGuide.com wasn't afraid to ask it — of whether Earl will be adding "aided and abetted the bumping of Joey from NBC's lineup" to his famous list of wrongdoings.

After watching this past ...

My Name Is Earl

Question: After watching this past week's episode of My Name Is Earl, I realize how surprisingly good Jaime Pressly is in her role as Earl's ex-wife. A little over the top, but it fits in well with this quirky show. So much so that I think she should get an Emmy nomination come next year. What do you think the chances are of that, along with Jason Lee (who is always pretty solid) and Ethan Suplee (who plays the dim-witted heart-of-gold brother so subtly)? Answer: Far be it from me to trust Emmy voters to be that much on the ball, but all three of these actors more than deserve to fill a few of those slots left open by the departure of Everybody Loves Raymond. Jason Lee is probably a slam dunk, but it can get trickier in the supporting categories. Still, Jaime Pressly is sensational. In my initial review, I championed her "fearlessly vulgar" take on the venal Joy, and she's only getting better. I was able to screen next week's (Nov. 15) episode, entitled "Ruined Joy's Wedding," and it' ... read more

Love That Earl!
He's a karma chameleon with a big heart

When is a born loser actually a winner? When his name is Earl. Get to know him. Maybe some positive karma will rub off on you. NBC's My Name Is Earl (Tuesdays at 9 pm/ET) is a rare bright spot of rambunctious merriment for a network that sure could use something to smile about. The show pulls off a neat trick. Like its underdog hero (the effortlessly likable Jason Lee) — a scruffy ex-crook who tells us each week he's "just trying to be a better person" — Earl is unashamedly crude, at times downright stupid in its lowlife caricatures, yet it's all so cheerfully endearing that you can't help but be won over by its lowbrow high jinks. This quirky, funky and rip-roaringly hilarious tall tale of white-trash redemption is delivered by Earl — in voice-over, the season's favorite device — with a wink and a shrug and without a trace of self-pity. Earl may be a dim bulb, but he sees the read more
