Needing money to satisfy his daughter Milly's (Jo Morrow) expensive tastes, Wormold (Alec Guinness), the Havana-based agent for a vacuum cleaner company, allows himself to be recruited into the British Secret Service by Hawthorne (Noel Coward). But, when his phony reports about "recruiting" fictitious agents and "discovering" mysterious installations cause his income and "expenses" to pile up, Wormold's secret service boss "C" (Ralph Richardson) sends Beatrice (Maureen O'Hara) to help him. Though enamored of Milly, Cuban police Captain Segura (Ernie Kovacs) discovers Wormold's plot and threatens to have him deported, making him a target for other spies. Under the circumstances, Wormold and Beatrice gladly head fore London to report to "C", where they are told his chicanery must never be revealed because it would be too scandalous. So, instead, Wormold is given a medal as he and Beatrice decide to marry.
