Was asked to leave the four-year program at Juilliard because his instructors didn't think he would be able to overcome his inner-city speech patterns.
Made his TV debut in 1985 as reporter Mike Rivers on One Life to Live.
Earned three NAACP Image Awards for his work on ER as Dr. Peter Benton.
Wrote, directed and starred in the 1996 short film Psalms from the Underground, about a black female militant.
