Grew up on a farm in Kansas.
Got hooked on acting after landing a small role in Craig Lucas' play Prelude to a Kiss, for which a friend had dared him to audition.
After college, moved to Chicago, where he found work in TV commercials and studied with the Second City and ImprovOlympic (now I.O.) comedy groups.
Had breakout role as Sheldon the hotel desk clerk in Almost Famous (2000).
With role in Modern Family, "reunited" with former Chicago improv colleagues David Koechner (Hank), Neil Flynn (The Middle) and Ian Gomez (Cougar Town) on Wednesday nights in ABC's fall 2009 lineup.
