"What's stitched on the pillow in many a living room: 'There are two things we should give our children: one is roots and the other is wings.' Dan would amend that to 'a swift kick out the...read more

The Thursday Playlist: Family Comedies and an Originals Spinoff

This fall you can really feel the Modern Family influence in the development of most networks' new comedy slates, and it's especially noticeable on NBC's Thursday lineup. With the exception of the long-running Parks and Recreation, which until the double expectancy whammy of Ann Perkins and Ron's Diane had been curiously child-free for a show supposedly set in America's heartland, NBC's new sitcoms are very much in the family way, for better or worse.

Welcome to the Family Draws Inspiration from Famous Families

NBC's new comedy Welcome to the Family may portray a white family often bumping heads with a Latino family, but the cast and creator Mike Sikowitz clarified that the sitcom is not a culture clash.

The series follows a white family (Mike O'Malley and Mary McCormack) and a Latino family (Ricardo Chavira and Justina Machado) who bond when their children (Ella Rae Peck and Joey Haro) fall in love and plan a family.

Victor Garber on Deception, His "Coming Out"

Everyone's a suspect on NBC's Deception, the freshman whodunit series about young detective Joanna Locasto (Meagan Good), who goes undercover to find out who killed her childhood best friend, Vivian Bowers. Leading the way in ethical dubiousness is Robert Bowers (Victor Garber), the family patriarch and Vivian's father. By the show's third episode, viewers know that Robert is not only championing a new drug that has exhibited deadly side effects in trial patients, but also recently ended an affair with his secretary, fired her, and then scared her into silence by dispatching an employee to break both of her brother's knees with a hammer. Robert hires Joanna as his personal assistant, thus providing her with an inside track to the family's professional and personal inner workings — but how much does he know about her true motives?

Read our full interview with Garber to get his take on Robert's capacity for evil, his on-screen marriage, and the one thing he thinks could tear the Bowers family apart.
