Weekend TV: Red Tent, One Child, Librarians

At times, you might mistake Lifetime's enjoyably earnest Biblical epic The Red Tent (Sunday-Monday, 9/8c) for an Old Testament version of Call the Midwife. Adapted from Anita Diamant's novel, this saga of revisionist her-story focuses on willful Dinah (The White Queen's Rebecca Ferguson), the only daughter of Jacob (Game of Thrones' Iain Glen) — he of the many sons, including the sartorially infamous Joseph. read more

I'm worried about Irving on Sleepy Hollow? Is he going to be OK?  — Heather
Actually, it turns out that selling your soul to the Horseman of War isn't all bad. "There's part of signing that contract that does work in his favor," executive producer Len Wiseman says. "As dark as that is, there's something in the offer that's quite hard to turn down. It is something that his character is going to have to struggle with because the temptation is not an easy one to turn his back on."

The Wednesday Playlist: Southland, Suburgatory Finales,Idol, Real-Life Glee

Without question, the hour of TV I have been most anticipating — and dreading — this week is the season, and for all we know, series finale of TNT's remarkable, brutal, bleak yet gripping cop drama Southland (Wednesday, 10/9c). Anticipating because each week, this series somehow raises the dramatic stakes for its characters, in a grueling but rewarding tour of duty through the socio-ethnic sprawl of Los Angeles. Dreading because Southland has almost always lived on the verge of ratings extinction, from the time TNT rescued the show after NBC dumped it before its second season could even premiere, and I fear (as do many) that this fifth season could very likely be its last hurrah. (Several of its stars have signed up for new work during this pilot season, perhaps seeing the writing on the wall.) read more

The Wednesday Playlist: Spies Abroad, DirecTV's Rogue, Meet ABC's Parents

In the spy game, intelligence is the most precious commodity. And in the world of fictional espionage, few authors of historical suspense deliver thrills with the crisp and unsparing intelligence of Alan Furst. BBC America's Spies of Warsaw, a two-part miniseries adaptation (concluding Tuesday, April 10) of his 2008 novel, loses none of its twisty allure and passionate urgency in the translation from page to screen (9/8c). Tension comes with the territory of late-'30s Poland, a country harboring refugees and dissidents in a murky culture of political intrigue, as everyone nervously waits for the jackboot to drop as rumors spread of Nazi aggression. read more

How to Make a Sitcom Like How to Live with Your Parents

They say you can't go home again. Unless, for instance, you're a recently divorced mom whose only option is to move in with your parents after your ex-husband blows through your savings — which is the case for Polly (Sarah Chalke), the protagonist of ABC's new comedy How to Live with Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life).

In the show's pilot episode, which airs Wednesday at 9:30/8:30c, Polly shows up on the doorstep of her freewheeling mother and stepfather (Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett) with her 5-year-old daughter in tow. Here, we've put together a how-to guide of how to get a show like How to Live with Your Parents off the ground:

1. Write and act what you know. The series is based on... read more
