Edward Zwick Fast Facts:
  • Worked as a feature writer and editor for Rolling Stone and The New Republic while in college.
  • Formed the Bedford Falls Company with writer-producer Marshall Herskovitz in 1985. The company has produced a number of acclaimed films and TV series, including thirtysomething, My So-Called Life, Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Traffic (2000).
  • Directed his first feature in 1986, the comedy-drama About Last Night..., starring Demi Moore and Rob Lowe.
  • Had a recurring on-screen role in Once and Again as Jessie's therapist.
  • His motivation to make the 2008 war film Defiance came partly from his 1950s childhood in Chicago, where, inspired by war films, he imagined bravely fighting the Axis powers of the 1940s. Being Jewish, he was attracted to the film's tale of heroic Jews battling Nazis.
  • His production firm is named the Bedford Falls Company, after the town in the classic Frank Capra film It's a Wonderful Life. Zwick considers Capra's work as the kind that has inspired him: character-based and narrative.
