Recasting News: Begley Jr. Is Gary's New Therapist

Ed Begley Jr. by Todd Williamson/ WireImage.com

Actor and environmental activist Ed Begley Jr. is adding another series to his already extensive resume. Begley has joined the new CBS comedy series Gary Unmarried (née Project Gary), which focuses on a newly divorced dad (Jay Mohr) and his calculating ex, Allison (Paula Marshall). The St. Elsewhere alum will play the bright (yet exceptionally arrogant) therapist who attempts to counsel Gary and Allison through their split-up — all the while being engaged to the latter! (Larry Miller played the counselor in the original pilot.)Begley's recent credits include the pot-fueled Pineapple Express, hitting theaters this week, and HBO's election drama Recount. — Gina DiNunno read more

April 9, 2007: Little Big Caine

Just to get this out of the way, was there ever a more nonsensical piece of dialogue than, “Harassment is not without its consequences/My team thrives on consequences”? I’m serious. What does that mean? How can one thrive on consequences?I have to admit to being slightly uncomfortable with this episode. Did we really have to have a Native American scalping someone as retribution? Granted, this Doug Lansing fellow did not seem to be the most altruistic person, but… scalping? For those of you who might have fallen asleep before the end, the murderer did end up being the very first person the CSIs talked to: the room-service attendant, who did it because he was 1/16 Native American.I do have to point out that O’Shay is a pretty brilliant evil mastermind. While in the end the Doug Lansing murder had nothing to do with him, he still managed to get Reggie Venton and his wife out of the picture by having a common thief sneak into Anna’s house to steal her bla... read more

February 26, 2007: But He Stole My Pic-a-nic Basket

OK, let’s work this one out together. Of the three men on the “mancation” — sidenote: has anyone in the history of anything ever called a vacation a mancation? Or am I tragically unhip? — the one who wasn’t Dennis or Rob (but whose name I never caught) killed Tess, and Dennis killed the bodyguard Rocko. Then he got nervous and wanted to call the cops, so Rob and not-Rob smeared Dennis’ vest with vanilla bought from the man from Deliverance so that the only grizzly bear living in the Everglades could maul Dennis. Everyone got it so far? Then, it turns out that Tess was only at the hotel in the first place because Anna had to make her demo tape. But because Anna was actually part of a prostitution ring, Horatio is in trouble with a horny politico played by Ed Begley Jr.Now my head hurts.Maybe it’s because this show airs late-ish and my brain isn’t in working order. Then again, maybe it’s because the plot made no sense. Last week I p... read more

Veronica Mars' Ed Begley Jr. Turns Reality-TV Green

Ed Begley Jr. and his wife, Rachelle Carson, Living with Ed

Although Ed Begley Jr. was recently killed off Veronica Mars, in reality he's all about staying alive. A veteran character actor who came to fame — and collected six Emmy nods — as St. Elsewhere's bumbling Dr. Victor Ehrlich, Begley is also a longtime environmental activist intent on helping the planet. Unlike many of his entertainment peers who ride around in gas-guzzling SUVs and live in mansions, Begley resides in a modest solar-powered home, drives an electric car and even takes the bus. While fans admire his dedication, they don't have to live with him. His blonde-bombshell, image-conscious actress wife, Rachelle Carson, does, however, and she often finds hersel read more

Exclusive: Find Out Who's Playing Veronica Mars' Dean!

Here's some breaking news on Hearst College's exhaustive search for a new dean: Just days after announcing in Ask Ausiello the "depressing" news that Michael McKean had nixed (foolishly, IMHO) an offer to play Hearst's headmaster on Veronica Mars, Rob Thomas has tapped another member of the Christopher Guest Acting Troupe to fill the void: Ed Begley Jr. That's a solid choice, although I would have preferred Parker Posey over both of 'em. Just the thought of a Parker-Veronica snark showdown makes me weak in the knees. read more

Fox may have buried the final...

Fox may have buried the final (and some of the finest) hours of Arrested Development against Friday's Opening Ceremonies of the (yawn along with me) Winter Olympics, but the show's devoted core fan base got a gold-medal treat.

To the very last moment — an inspired cameo by exec producer (and heretofore never-seen narrator) Ron Howard, saying, "I don't see it as a series. Maybe a movie." — Arrested never compromised its extravagantly peculiar vision, its dense narrative style or its twisted sense of humor. The last four episodes, bundled together and thrown away by a network that had finally given up the good fight, were deliriously funny for those precious few with a taste for such inspired absurdity.

Just a partial list of things you'd never find anywhere else: A ventriloquist puppet wearing a "George Bush Doesn't Care About Black Puppets" T-shirt. A read more
