Pain and Gain earned $20 million in its opening weekend to claim the top spot at the box office. The Michael Bay comedy, starring Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, narrowly slipped past last week's top film, Tom Cruise's Oblivion, which fell to the No. 2 spot with $17.4 million in its second week, Box Office Mojo reports.
It takes a lot to keep tough guy Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson on the sidelines. But he has finally met his match — in the way of a hernia.
"Saw my Dr. who had to push my intestines back thru the tear in my abdomen," Johnson wrote on Twitter April 21. "Kinda romantic. Surgery is next week. #Bringiton." The injury forced the actor to skip the April 22 Hollywood premiere of his new movie Pain & Gain.
Johnson underwent surgery the next day, on April 23, and took to Twitter again to tell fans he emerged okay — along with a picture from his hospital gurney: "Surgery a success! Dr repaired 3 hernial tears (fun pain). Superman is on the mend."
Jack the Giant Slayer opened at the No. 1 spot at the box office with $28 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
The $195 million-budget modern take on the classic tale stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular character, as well as Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci and Ian McShane.
