On the busy assembly line of screen-to-stage remakes, few properties might seem like more natural fits than the great MGM movie musicals, and this season has not one but three Vincente Minnelli -directed classics being overhauled in fresh incarnations. In the Broadway pipeline are An American in Paris and Gigi , while writer Douglas Carter Beane s long-gestating rethink of The Band Wagon is getting a test drive as a two-week special event, courtesy of the Encores! series.
Live from Lincoln Center turns 40 this year, and Nathan Lane is helping the show celebrate. On Oct. 10, Lane will repeat his Broadway role in The Nance. Written by Douglas Carter Beane, The Nance stars Lane as a gay burlesque comic in the '30s whose career is built on playing exaggeratedly feminine campy stereotypes. The TV production, Lane says, was shot over three days in front of live audiences.
