Tonight at 9 pm/ET, Scrubs fans are in for quite a treat, as NBC presents a nearly all-musical episode of the medical comedy. There is singing and dancing, and even a ditty about doodie. TVGuide.com spoke with series creator Bill Lawrence, a big musical-theater fan, to find out why he suddenly felt the urge to have his comedy break out into song. "The tough part for us is always trying to make it organic to the show," says Lawrence. "We wouldn't have done [a musical], except that our medical advisor on the show stumbled onto this case where somebody had an aneurysm and was hearing everything in music. Obviously, they weren't hearing an entire Broadway musical with singing and dancing, but for us in the world of Scrubs, that works."

The musical episode of NBC's Scrubs doesn’t hit the air until Jan. 18, but visitors to YouTube can now check out a pair of numbers starting Friday. In addition to the Zach Braff-Donald Faison duet "Guy Love," which has been making the rounds for weeks, the site will also make available "Everything Comes Down to Poo," sung by Braff, Faison and guest star Stephanie D'Abruzzo (Avenue Q).

Question: Hey Matt, I'm curious about something. All year long, critics have said great things about Neil Patrick Harris as Barney on How I Met Your Mother, and yet no one mentioned him come Emmy time. What's up? Did I miss a fall from grace or something? Really curious!

I have to start paying more attention to those doctors milling about in the background on Scrubs, because for the life of me I don't ever recall seeing actress Elizabeth Banks (Slither, 40 Year Old Virgin). But on May 9, not only will we learn that she's been there the whole time (wink, wink), but we'll discover that she's got a crush on J.D. (Zach Braff). Banks' arc will continue into the season finale on May 16 and, assuming the show will return for a sixth season (NBC, don't make me come over there!), she'll likely be back in the fall.
BTW, not to sound like a broken record or anything, but Scrubs is seriously enjoying its best season creatively to date. No show right now makes me laugh harder or with more consistency. Question: I saw in the Biz column that NBC has not yet decided if they will renew Scrubs. So this leads to a series of questions: Why would a network that has a limited number of quality shows even think about letting one of them go off the air? If the show is struggling, why does NBC refuse to put it on Thursday, where it could become part of a great comedy lineup? Finally, if it isn't renewed by NBC, could it be picked up by ABC? I think I read that someone at ABC was part of the team that developed it for NBC. I really do hope it survives, because it is a shame to see shows go off the air that have some sense of originality and can actually make you laugh. Thanks for the time.

Question: Couldn't agree more with your comment about Scrubs' Donald Faison doing some of the best comedic work on TV. His rendition of "Poison" was perfection. That episode will never leave my TiVo.
Answer: Yeah, I've got that one saved on my FauxVo, right next to the final four Arrested Developments (talk about perfection) and the last six episodes of Battlestar Galactica, which I haven't seen yet. (I'm planning a marathon this weekend.)

Take heart, Love Monkey fans. There's a silver lining to the show's untimely demise — it freed Tom Cavanagh up to return to Scrubs! Sources say Mr. C. returned to the set this week to reprise his role as Zach Braff's older bro. In the episode, slated to air in April, Dan comes to town to avoid a job interview his mother has set up for him.
Speaking of Scrubs, is it just me, or is the show on freakin' fire this season? And let's give a big round of applause to Donald Faison, who, IMHO, is doing the best comedic work on the tube right now. Just when I thought he couldn't top that brilliant kung-fu sequence, he goes and fronts Sacred Heart's first all-boy air band. Genius I tell you, genius!
