The story of Allen and Grace Brewer, a couple grieving after the death of their older son Bennett in a car crash. When a woman, Rose, contacts them and reveals she is pregnant with Bennett's child, the Brewers invite her to stay in their home. At first, Rose's presence threatens to tear the family even further apart, but her interaction with each of the Brewers proves to be the very thing that brings them back together.

Three months after Allen (Pierce Brosnan) and Grace's (Susan Sarandon) son dies, Rose (Carey Mulligan) shows up on their doorstep pregnant with his child. When bumbling product-tester, Fielding Mellish (Allen) is jilted by his girlfriend, Nancy (Louise Lasser), he heads to the tiny republic of San Marcos for a vacation only to become kidnapped by rebels! Once the band of rebels seizes power, their leader goes crazy, and they replace him with Mellish, thinking he can save the country. But when Mellish is nabbed by the FBI, he is put on trial for subversion and in a side-splitting courtroom show-down including the most hilarious self-cross examination ever.

When a bumbling New Yorker is dumped by his activist girlfriend, he travels to a tiny Latin American nation and becomes involved in its latest rebellion.
