Irma la Douce -- Paris? the red-light district. A rookie police officer, Nestor Patou (Jack Lemmon), falls for a beautiful prostitute, Irma la Douce (Shirley MacLaine). Before long, Nestor discovers that the only way to keep Irma is to become her new pimp, and the only way to accomplish that is to knock the block off the present pimp. As a result, Nestor becomes #1 pimp on the block. It is not long, though, before he becomes insanely jealous of Irma's customers. Despairing, Nestor devises a way to keep Irma all for himself, yet allow her to continue in her profession. And when the plan backfires, there is only one person who can help him... but will she believe him? Lemmon's comic performance, under the direction of Billy Wilder, has been compared to some of the great visual comedy of the silent comedians.

The Old Man and the Sea -- Based on Ernest Hemingway's classic novel, Spencer Tracy shines in his portrayal of an aging fisherman battling against the elements of the sea in all its fury.

Derived from the Old Testament, the story revolves around the character of Ruth, a pagan priestess who serves in her temple under the High Priestess, and who falls in love with a Hebrew man named Mahlon. This love brings her spiritual beliefs into question as she has trouble reconciling her pagan religion with his belief in one invisible deity. By the time they marry, she has decided to convert to Judaism, but her newfound spiritual beliefs are put to the test when Mahlon dies. Ruth travels back to Bethlehem with Mahlon's mother, Naomi, where she suffers religious persecution for her prior beliefs as a pagan, and she and Naomi grow closer as they try to survive the hardships of poverty together. This relationship and her own spiritual reflection strengthen her belief in Judaism, and she again finds love with another Hebrew man, Boaz.

Clint Eastwood directs William Holden and Kay Lenz as a mismatched pair who eventually find common ground. Successful businessman Frank Harmon (William Holden), disillusioned after a bitter divorce, thinks he can shut out the pain by isolating himself at his beach house. But when free-spirited Breezy (Kay Lenz) appears on his doorstep, Frank is unable to turn her away.
