Season 7 Idol Mentors Are Announced

American Idol's top 10 by Frank Micelotta/Fox

Finally, watching the tedious results show paid off! Ryan Seacrest announced last night that the (thank goodness only) four mentors for the top 10 will be Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Neil "Sweet Caroline" Diamond. Each mentor will help the remaining finalists prepare for their Tuesday-night performances and will perform themselves on the Wednesday-night results show. One can only guess what the themes will be with this eclectic group. Dolly could be tapped for a country night, Mariah could do either a Billboard 100 or an R&B night, Andrew Lloyd Webber must be coaching on musical-theater numbers, and Neil Diamond should totally do a karaoke-favorites night... because let's face it, every time I go to a karaoke bar, at least two or three people sing Neil Diamond songs. Great, now I have "Sweet Caroline" stuck in my head. Specific dates for the mentors will be released at a later time, so in the meantime, brush up on your favorite Dolly, Mariah, Webber and D... read more

Backstage at Dancing with the Stars: Hello, Dolly!

Dolly Parton

Some stars can cause a commotion just by walking into the room. And that was certainly the case with country legend Dolly Parton, who brought the crowd to its feet without any prompting from Dancing with the Stars' warm-up Cory Almeida. Rarely has the ballroom seen this kind of over-the-top reception for a guest performer. The only question was whether the 500 members of the studio audience would settle down long enough to let her sing. "I didn't have to say a word," says Almeida. "Come on, it's Dolly Parton." Like most television shows that go out live to the satellite, Dancing with the Stars pretapes special segments that require too much extra setup to be done on the fly. There might be special staging, as there was for the exceptional performance by tap dancer read more

Will Floyd Mayweather survive this decision? Dancing With the Stars by Isaac Brekken/ABC

I don't see a big surprise coming our way tonight. There is a very solid bottom three in Wayne Newton, Floyd Mayweather and Josie Maran. The only injustice will be if Floyd Mayweather goes home too soon. He has a lot left to give.So who do you think will go? Are we in for an unexpected ousting? And don't forget, Dolly Parton's in the ballroom tonight! Let's chew the fat during the show and be sure to check back later for my thoughts on who was sent packing! read more

The New Season: Wednesday Heats Up

Lucy Kate Hale, Michelle Ryan and Molly Price in Bionic Woman by Mitchell Haaseth/NBC Photo

First, an important public-service announcement: Tonight on The War, we relive D-Day, a momentous turning point in military history brought to vivid life by those who lived through it, courtesy of Ken Burns' masterful way with documentary narrative. I know this is premiere week, and Wednesday is the most competitive night for new shows this season, but I wouldn't be doing my duty if I didn't remind everyone that this is TV you not only shouldn't miss, but it's an experience you'll never forget. (The reality, though, is that PBS is giving viewers multiple opportunities to see these episodes, and I can't think of a better gift DVD for holiday season.) Back to the network game, where only one of the nine new series being launched on Wednesdays is MIA: ABC’s marvelous Pushing Daisies, its premiere pushed back a week by the tsunami-like launch of Dancing with the Stars, which once again is turning out to be the ratings monster everyone expected. (And the men, by and large, had a bla... read more

Move Over, Martina McBride: Dolly Parton's Punchin' the Clock Again

Dolly Parton by Rick Diamond/WireImage.com

Sorry, folks, but no way was I sticking an item about the adorable Dolly Parton in the same section as an item about the deplorable Marilyn Manson. After working "9 to 5" all these years, she deserves her own headline, dagnabbit. So what's the story? In February, for the first time in nearly 20 years, she's releasing a mainstream country album, which she'll follow up with a world tour. No bluegrass. No folk. It's gonna be heaven! Faith Hill, you've been warned. read more
