American Idol's Top 10 High Notes

Katharine McPhee and Chris Daughtry courtesy Fox

I have never seen any show transcend the boundaries of age, race, religion, weight and politics as beautifully as American Idol has in the past six years. I can discuss it with my husband's 70-year-old uncle (who thinks Sanjaya should be shot), my cabdriver (who cries when he hears Kat McPhee), my gynecologist (who thinks Paula's hysterical... in a bad way), and my 6- and 4-year-old cousins, who think the sun rises and sets with Simon Cowell. That's right, you heard me, they like Simon (not to mention all the cute boys on the show). So I asked some of my peeps what they thought were some of the best moments from American Idol, and this is what we came up with. — Erin FoxKelly Clarkson, "Stuff Like That There" | Watch on YouTubeThis was not only the moment I knew Kelly would win the first Idol title, it was the moment I knew she could literally sing anything.Fantasia Barrino, "Summertime" | Watch on YouTube I don't think there was a dry eye in America after this stunning, gooseb... read more

Bobby Brown, Marcia Brady Vie for Country Career

Bobby Brown by Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com

CMT in January will premiere Gone Country, a reality competition in which the likes of Bobby Brown, Carnie Wilson, Twisted Sister's Dee Snider, Idol finalist Diana DeGarmo, Julio Iglesias Jr., Maureen McCormick and R&B artist Sisqo are tutored by Big & Rich's John Rich in the ways of country crooning. According to the Reporter, the celebs will cohabitate in a Nashville manse for two weeks as they compete in challenges involving the on- and off-stage country-music lifestyle. At the end, Rich will dub one a winner, and he/she will release a song about, I am guessing, a great love gone wrong. read more

Diana Defends Fashion Flubs

The road to runner-up status wasn't smooth for American Idol's Diana DeGarmo. Besides mastering their musical numbers, these pop-star wannabes had to work on their images. Sometimes, this cosmetic work included damage control — especially for DeGarmo, who sometimes sported some truly unflattering frocks. During the Latin-themed week, for instance, Simon told Di: "I give the performance a seven and the dress a zero." Ouch! "Well, I learned satin is not really my material," DeGarmo tells TV Guide Online. "Unless you're Tamyra Gray, you cannot wear it. I learned that the hard way. Sorry for the purple dress!" At least this plucky 16-year-old has a healthy sense of humor. You'd think catty criticisms of her weight and clothes would be crushing at her age, but the Georgia girl sure puts on a brave face. "You know, I'm not the skinniest thing, obviously," she says. "It's OK. You just gotta learn what to wear. But dishing o read more

Fantasia's Dream Comes True

OK, all you incurable American Idol addicts. In yesterday's Insider, you read Fantasia Barrino's reflections on the eve of her final showdown with Diana DeGarmo. Last night, Miss Fanny ended up victorious! Backstage at the Kodak Theater, TV Guide Online was there when girlfriend strolled into the press room — barefoot, natch — for her post-victory Q&A. As always, the 19-year-old single mom was a total trip-and-a-half. Now that you're guaranteed a record contract and lotsa money, what will you do first?Fantasia Barrino: [Laughs] The only thing I want to do is go to an all-you-can-eat restaurant! But seriously, folks...Fantasia: My grandmother has her own day care, where I used to help out. She wouldn't pay me, but she would bless me and say, "I know you need things for Zion, so here's change to go get it." I always had to borrow money from people to get w read more

Fantasia Faces Idol Verdict

Hopefully, by now, you've made peace with Fantasia Barrino and Diana DeGarmo squaring off as American Idol's final two. (We know many of y'all wanted La Toya as Fanny's sparring partner, but it didn't pan out that way, OK? Chill!) Tonight, we'll learn if dark-horse Diana triumphs or if Fantasia is the last Idol standing, as is widely predicted. Funny thing is, AI fans seem to care more about the finale's outcome than these two ladies do! You heard from Di in yesterday's Insider. Now here's what Ms. Barrino — that 19-year-old spitfire single mom from North Carolina — has to say for her bad self before the final showdown. What's been your best night on AI so far?Fantasia: My best night was when I sang "Summertime." I was going through a little something. I was getting tired, missing family and hearing that people thought I was arrogant because I would say things back to read more

Can Diana Really Win?

Fantasia Barrino is clearly the judges' pet on American Idol. Her popular pizzazz even shot her past rivals like La Toya London, whose vocal range was arguably superior. So does Diana DeGarmo seriously have a chance for more than runner-up status? The smiley 16-year-old finalist from Snellville, Ga., remains as perky and optimistic as ever. After all, Miss D. is "still standing," just like she sang it. Here, she answers some of AI fans' biggest questions. Not long ago, you were a bottom-dweller in the results shows. Were you surprised to survive and make the final two?Diana DeGarmo: You always come with the hope that you'll make it this far, but you never know how people will take to you. I got halfway through [the competition] and noticed I wasn't doing my best. What really changed my position was I asked myself, "What would I do if I were at home in front of friends and family, and read more

Idol's Di Sweet at 16

American Idol's Diana DeGarmo crooned "I've Got The Music In Me" — and America was convinced: The sweet-natured 16-year-old from Snellville, Ga., was voted into AI's finals. And cynical as we are, it must be admitted: Di's audition story might possibly be the cutest we've ever heard... Sharp-eyed AI aficionados may've noticed that, on the show's Web site, it says she's from Georgia, but her audition city was Honolulu. Why'd she go so far to try out? "When the auditions came to Atlanta, I had a performance that same morning, so I wasn't able to go," DeGarmo tells TV Guide Online. "I'd committed myself three months before to sing at the opening of a Wal-Mart! I didn't want to back out. But I saw that the next city on the list was Honolulu. My cousin Celina lives there, so I went. I got on the s read more
