New Season Reviews: Selfie, Manhattan Love Story, PBS's Makers On Women in Comedy

John Cho, Karen Gillan

How I'd love it if any of this season's dismal new wave of romantic comedies, all vying to be the next How I Met Your Mother, made me LOL. Sadly, I'm more inclined to search for a "cringe" emoticon, especially where ABC's two new Tuesday night entries are concerned.

The less objectionable is Selfie (8/7c), a strained attempt to update Pygmalion to the Instagram era, but coming off more like My Fair Lucy — because this Eliza Doolittle, here called Eliza Dooley (Doctor Who's Karen Gillan), is silly and vapid beyond belief or tolerance. read more

Derek Jeter Goes Out on Top In His Final MLB Game

Derek Jeter

Derek Jeter ended his professional baseball career on a high note, leading his Yankees to a victory in his final MLB game.

Playing against their biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees won 9-5 with Jeter hitting his 3,465th base hit -- the most in the franchise's history — and earning his 1,311th RBI. After an emotional farewell in New York last week, the 40-year-old shortstop was on the lineup for his final game as a designated hitter. After he reached base on a single, he was replaced by pinch runner Brian McCann. Jeter hugged the Red Sox pitcher and then tipped his helmet to his Yankees crowd before going back into the dugout.

Barbara Walters

Barbara's picked her fair share of questionable folks (Kate Gosselin, Monica Lewinsky, Geri Halliwell?!), but when the list was announced for this year's 10 Most Fascinating People, we wondered if Walters, at the ripe old age of 82, had officially jumped the shark.

Critic's Guide to Wednesday TV: Nearing the End of Survivor and X Factor

Ozzy Lusth, Edna Ma

Some thoughts about what's on tonight, starting with the reality contests. Was CBS' Survivor just teasing us with that trailer that showed Edna the Meek possibly upsetting Ozzy the Cocky in the next Redemption Island challenge? We'll believe it when we see it, but it would be nice for something unexpected to happen. The final Upolu 5 have stayed boringly, rigidly loyal to their game plan the last few weeks, but now that it's down to the next-to-last episode (8/7c) — the finale airs as the usual multi-hour extravaganza on Sunday — all bets presumably are off. Could anything keep Coach from making the finals? And if Ozzy somehow is bounced as well, that would make the climactic tribal council more interesting — which isn't the same as memorable.
