Wooden Butterflies -- Behind a small fruit garden in North London, two men handcraft guitars. Haim and David are modern-day luthiers, fashioning 'organic' stringed instruments from recycled wood. Tracing the genesis and birth of one dulcimer, Wooden Butterflies reveals a journey of metamorphosis: the translation of memory into music. Histories unravel as the body of the instrument takes shape from an 18th Century piano and a discarded painting of South Africa. Rather than going to waste, these tales are themselves recycled and raveled anew with the life stories of Haim and David, bound within a physical form. While the men lend voice and shape to memory, the dulcimer emerges and absorbs both the former soldier's quest for purpose and the Hasidic Jew's search for reason. The city whirls in constant motion around this insulated cocoon as two disparate lives are ingrained in metal, wood, paint, and glue, to be released ultimately as harmony. In this, Wooden Butterflies explores the ontology of music, asking viewers to contemplate not only its physical forms but also the emotions and experiences which create its possibility.
