David Niven Fast Facts:
  • Named David because he was born on St. David's Day.
  • Served in the British Army in Malta after graduating from Sandhurst, and returned to the military in 1939 for service in World War II. Peter Ustinov was his batman (British term for personal servant).
  • Cofounded the Four Star TV production company with Dick Powell, Charles Boyer and Ida Lupino.
  • While presenting the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1974, a streaker ran across the stage. Niven quipped, "Isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings."  
  • Was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease, in 1981.
  • Due to his declining health, his lines in the films Trial of the Pink Panther and Curse of the Pink Panther were later dubbed by Rich Little.
