Narrowing It Down to the Top 12

As bummed as I was after last weeks results show Im pretty OK with all of the eliminations made tonight I was puzzled by one choice among the four who went home but all in all I think this seasons top 12 is looking pretty solid No group performance tonight and instead we got Blake Lewis I was a big fan of his last season loved his You Give Love a Bad Name and it was good to see him again but his song How Many Words was totally ho-hum Speaking of ho-hum for those who didnt catch it Paulas single is not the No 1 downloaded song on iTunes as Ryan sort of implied but rather the top music video Which is only slightly less disturbing Anyway the first couple of guys to take their seats were no surprise namely David C who did some weird thing with his tongue as he was waiting to hear his fate and David A who seemed to think it was a foregone conclusion that he would be safe When it came to the girls turn it was no surprise that Brooke was t read more

Lionel Richie to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

This is Lionel Richie's week! Just two days after American Idol semifinalist David Cook performed a rocked-out version of Richie's 1980s hit "Hello," the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers announced that they would be honoring the former Commodore with a lifetime achievement award. Richie will be presented with the Golden Note Award, which has previously been given to artists such as Tom Petty and Stevie Wonder, next month in a ceremony that will also honor Steve Miller.ASCAP sees to it that songwriters and artists in their organization receive royalty pay for the use of their music. So in addition to handing Richie an award, they'll also be lining his wallet, thanks to Cook's rousing Idol performance. — Adam Bryant read more

Cheers: David Cook Turns Up the Heat on Idol

David Cook by Frank Micelotta / FOX

Cheers to David Cook for providing the first truly transcendent moment on American Idol this season. As I noted in last week's Cheers & Jeers vodcast, none of the new contestants had stood out for me yet (I'm not convinced David Archuleta understands the meaning of "Imagine"). But by taking Lionel Richie's '80s cheese-pop ballad "Hello" — remember the video with the blind sculptress? — and turning it into a raging rocker, Cook whipped up an act of genuine musical alchemy. Jason Castro's quavering take on "Hallelujah" was also effective, but fell short by comparison to any number of versions of that can't-miss song (Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright, k.d. lang). With Cook's stunning turn, we may have just said "Hello" to our next American Idol.• Read and react to Bruce's opinions on Hillary Clinton's Daily Show visit, FX's Dirt and more!• Share your own raves and rants about other shows on the Reader Cheers & Jeers discussion board.• We ma... read more
