Life in Cold Blood — Review

Concluding Sir David Attenborough's overview of life on the planet, Life in Cold Blood tells the story of reptiles and amphibians. Using the latest technology, we watch as lizards bask in the rays of the sun to raise their temperature, see astounding action shots of frogs leaping in slow motion, and view beautiful time-lapsed photos of tadpoles growing inside eggs. Educational and entertaining, these 5 episodes on 2 discs will change your perceptions of cold-blooded creatures forever. Also included are behind-the-scene featurettes added to the end of each episode. — Gord LaceyBuy [Life in Cold Blod on Amazon.com.read more

There are parrots in New Zealand called keas that fancy something a little more interesting than the usual fruit and nuts they eat meat. To hunt, birds need super-senses and great skill. Great grey owls in North America can listen in super-stereo to the movements and noises made by lemmings hidden away under a thick blanket by snow. In Europe, kestrels are a familiar sight hovering over motorway verges. Using their ultra-violet vision, kestrels position themselves over areas where voles have marked their tracks with drops of urine, which is very conspicuous in ultra-violet. In the rainforests of Trinidad, David Attenborough finds a bird with an acute sense of smell. Attenborough buries a piece of meat under some leaves and twigs and retreats to a distant vantage point.

DVD Pick of the Week: April 24, 2007

I'm extremely excited for April 24, because that's the day one of my most anticipated titles is released. No, it's not WKRP, which is plagued with music-licensing issues. It's the BBC release of Planet Earth. This 11-episode series explores our planet like no other series has done, from the North Pole to the South Pole, it's all covered in this program. They spent $25 million and 2,000 days in the field shooting material for the program, and they did it all using high-definition cameras. Narrated by the legendary David Attenborough (the Discovery Channel version is narrated by Sigourney Weaver), this series is being released on DVD, Blu-ray and HD DVD, and all formats are among the top sellers on Amazon (as of now, DVD is No. 1, HD DVD No. 8 and Blu-ray No. 19 — their list is updated hourly). The DVD set also includes a bonus program, "Planet Earth: The Future," and 110 minutes of behind-the-scenes material that isn't available on the higher-priced Blu-ray and HD DVD releases.T... read more
