  • Eight for Eight: Phelps Makes Olympic History | Olympics | 8/17/2008
Usain Bolt was crowned the world’s fastest man and Dara Torres picked up two more silver medals at age 41, but without a doubt the day belonged to Michael Phelps. The king of the Water Cube contributed a sizzling 50.15 butterfly split (history’s fastest) to the U.S.’s world-record setting 4x100-meter medley relay, earning his eighth gold medal in Beijing and leaving Mark Spitz’ venerable 1972 record in his proverbial wake. "The sport of swimming will never be the same,” NBC’s Rowdy Gaines said. “The name Michael Phelps will be synonymous with perfection."As Phelps was quick to point out, don’t forget the names of his teammates, either. Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen (salvaging an otherwise disappointing Olympics) and Jason Lezak, the hero of the 4x100 freestyle relay, swam the backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle legs, respectively. And as if feeling responsible for Phelps’ historic run wasn’t enough, Lezak jokingly told NBC’s... read more
  • At 41 Dara Torres Has 50 Free Gold in Sight | Olympics | 8/16/2008
Dara Torres just might be the story of the Water Cube tonight — no small feat when Michael Phelps is going for his eighth gold medal. The 41-year-old athletic marvel is on track to win a medal, possibly gold, in the women’s 50-meter freestyle (airing at 10:03 pm/ET, on NBC). Torres is on her fifth Olympic team, a record for a U.S. swimmer, and she’s the oldest Olympic swimmer in history — a mark she actually first made in Sydney at age 33. The 50 could bring her eleventh career medal; No. 10 was the silver she won last weekend on the 4x100 freestyle relay. Many of Torres’ teammates weren’t even born when she competed in her first Olympic Games in 1984, at the tender age of 17. “I feel like a lot of times I’m one of the kids here on the team,” Torres says, but in reality she’s a middle-aged mama. With her 2-year-old daughter, Tessa Grace, cheering from the stands, Torres won both the 50- and 100-meter freestyles at the U.S. Olympic... read more
  • Phelps Takes Gold, While Tragedy Strikes Olympic Family | Olympics | 8/10/2008
One down — seven to go?The first gold medal is always the hardest, or so I've heard. Michael Phelps must be breathing a sigh of relief (if he has time to pause, that is, between his grueling schedule of heats and races) after smashing his own world and Olympic records with a time of 4:03.84 in the men's 400-meter individual medley to take gold. His teammate Ryan Lochte earned bronze. The day started out on a note of tragedy: In what appears to be a random act of violence, a Chinese man attacked family members of a U.S. volleyball coach at the Drum Tower, a popular Beijing tourist attraction. Todd Bachman, the father-in-law of men's indoor volleyball head coach Hugh McCutcheon, was killed, and his wife, Barbara, was seriously injured. The couple's tour guide was also wounded in the attack. The Bachmans' daughter Elisabeth, McCutcheon's wife, was with her parents at the time but did not sustain injuries. The men's volleyball team — led by assistant coach Ron Larsen, in... read more
  • Swimmer Dara Torres Makes a Splash at 41 | Olympics | 8/7/2008
The Olympics are a month away and a new media darling has emerged. Dara Torres, a 41-year-old mom from Parkland, Florida, won two events at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for swimming in Omaha and immediately vaulted into the spotlight. NBC’s Trials ratings climbed over the weekend, thanks in large part to Torres (and, of course, Michael Phelps), with 3.60 million tuning in on July 4; 4.02 million on July 5; and 6.49 million on the 6th. She was ubiquitous on Monday, featured in segments on Today, Good Morning America, ABC World News and NBC Nightly News. Tuesday night she'll sit down with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show (July 8, 11:35 pm/ET). Expect NBC to quickly add her into their promo rotation for the Beijing Games.Torres, who came out of retirement two years ago, qualified for her fifth Olympic team and will be the oldest swimmer ever to represent the United States at the Games. She won the 50- and 100-meter freestyle events at the Trials, setting an American record at the... read more
