Anyone who thinks TV isn't trying hard enough to raise the bar this midseason should check out tonight's most distinctive shows. With the official series launch of Fox's fantastical Touch (9/8c) and another fascinating episode of NBC's mystifying Awake (10/9c), I imagine some will maintain that they may be trying a little too hard.
It's probably fair to wonder if Fox is touched in the head for going forward with a show as out-there as Touch. This hasn't been an easy time for truly offbeat shows to gain traction, as risk-takers including Smash, The River and Awake have struggled in the ratings, with critics eager to point out their obvious flaws while often undervaluing the ambition it took to put ...

Inside his trailer on the set of his new Fox series Touch, Kiefer Sutherland can't stop thinking about numbers: 12,000,000... 318... 100...
"It boggles the mind," he says. "It's become a huge part of my life."
No, Sutherland hasn't become obsessed with patterns like his son on the show. Touch tells the story of Martin Bohm (Sutherland), a once promising journalist who's now a widower unloading baggage at JFK. His 11-year-old special-needs son, Jake (David Mazouz), scribbles strangely prescient numbers into notebooks but has never uttered a word. Kiefer Sutherland's back at Fox and once again looking to save the world, but this time with a twist. Fox has given a firm series order to Touch, a new drama starring Sutherland as the father of a 10-year-old boy with an unusual gift.
Fox had previously announced Touch as a contender for midseason, but executives wanted to first see the show's pilot before committing to a full pickup. Producers delivered the show to the network earlier this month, and Fox executives liked what they saw.
Touch has been given a 13-episode order and will air some time in spring 2012 on Fox, although the network has not yet given it a firm airdate....
