  • Casting Scoops: Garrett on Monk, Rather Back to D$M and More! | Today's News: Our Take | 5/23/2008
Well, would you look at this: I took a bunch of random exclusive casting scoops and packaged them into one very special Ausiello Report blog post. Enjoy! • Exercising the "Sarah Chalke Clause" in his 'Til Death contract, Brad Garrett has signed on to appear in Monk's July 18 season premiere. He'll play a handyman who helps Tony Shalhoub with his home renovations.• Also on the Monk front, Robert Loggia (Big, Mancuso, FBI, assorted mobster roles) has been cast as an aging boxer in "Mr. Monk Takes a Punch," a Season 7 episode slated to air in August. • Former CBS newsman Dan Rather is reprising his role as former CBS newsman Dan Rather on ABC's Dirty Sexy Money next season. This time 'round, he'll be interviewing Patrick Darling (Billy Baldwin) about his new book.• Superman's pledging a fraternity! And that's not even close to being the truth! • Judge Dismisses the Majority of Dan Rather's Lawsuit | Today's News: Our Take | 4/10/2008
Former CBS Evening News anchor Dan Rather's $70 million lawsuit against his former employers may still make it to court, but it won't be packing nearly as much punch. Manhattan judge Ira Gammerman dismissed four of the seven claims made in Rather's lawsuit, particularly those that name Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone (Viacom is CBS' former parent company), CBS president Leslie Moonves and former CBS News president Andrew Heyward. Rather's lawsuit, which was filed in September, claimed that he was treated unfairly by CBS News after a September 2004 broadcast about the military service of President Bush in Vietnam was proven to be flawed. He also claimed his reputation in the final months of his contract was damaged because he was made a "scapegoat" in an effort to appease the Bush administration. With the dismissal, the suit has now been boiled down to a garden-variety contract dispute. With all of the sensational political accusations and sought punitive damages dismissed, the remai... read more
  • Dan Rather: CBS "Overlords" Are Hiding Court Docs | Today's News: Our Take | 2/27/2008
Appearing in Manhattan Supreme Court on Tuesday for a hearing in his lawsuit against CBS, Dan Rather claimed that key documents are being withheld from him, namely a private investigator's report he believes could back up his infamously disputed story abut President Bush's service in the National Guard. "It is a fact that corporate overlords working in secret collusion with the powers in Washington are intruding far too often in far too many newsrooms," attested the veteran reporter, who is suing CBS for benching him in 2005 in order to suck up to the White House.CBS counters that the docs in question actually support its case, and "will be made public" once introduced at trial. read more
  • Katie Couric Caught on Video Mocking Dan Rather | Today's News: Our Take | 11/17/2007
CBS Evening News frontwoman Katie Couric can be seen aping Dan Rather in a new video circulating on the Internet. (Watch it here.) With the camera rolling and as she prepped for a remote broadcast, Couric is seen saying, "I'm going to be like Dan Rather on YouTube," referring to a clip that circulated last month showing Rather fiddling with his overcoat and fussing over his appearance. "Geez, don't you think he deserves a little payback?" Upon completing her shtick, Couric declares, "This tart is ready to go!" — an allusion to dismissive remarks Rather directed at her this past June. What do you think? Did Dan have it coming, or did Katie cross the line of journalistic integrity? read more
  • Rather: Gov't, Big Biz's Influence on News Spurred Lawsuit | Today's News: Our Take | 9/21/2007
Dan Rather on Thursday explained that the increasing influence of the government and large corporations on networks' news reporting spurred his decision to poke the Eye with a $70 million lawsuit. "Somebody, sometime has got to take a stand and say democracy cannot survive, much less thrive, with the level of big corporate and big-government interference and intimidation on news," he said on Larry King Live. Relating the topic to his being cast as a "scapegoat" by CBS in the wake of his controversial story on President Bush's military service, he said, "They sacrificed support for independent journalism for corporate financial gain, and in so doing... they undermined a lot at CBS News." read more
