On July 28th 1976, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale rocked Tangshan, China, causing casualties over 400,000.
Coalminer Ding Yi takes the night shift for co-worker Liu Zi-gang on that day so that Liu can take care of his beloved pregnant wife Han Wei. Ironically, Liu dies and Ding remains alive under coalmine.
Surviving the quake and rescued from the rubble, Han Wei gives birth to a baby daughter and takes in two orphans Da Long, Er Long. Guilt-ridden by the death of his best friend, Ding feels obligated to support Han and her family.
In due course, Er Long is sent back to home country Japan and Da Long is received by a state run orphan school. Knowing that he can never fill Zi Gang s shoes in Han Wei s life, Ding Yi finally departs to assist his brother in Guangdong leaving Han Wei and a recently graduated Xiao Yu.
Years later the family eventually finds each other and are forced to make decisions which will inevitably alter their lives.
