Phenomenon's "Mentalist" Offers Paranormal Powers in Halloween Special

Uri Geller, Phenomenon

Last Wednesday night, NBC premiered Phenomenon, a series touted as a "live search for the next great mentalist." Based on a similar Israeli show featuring controversial mentalist Uri Geller, Phenomenon returns tonight with a two-hour Halloween special (8 pm/ET). TVGuide.com recently spoke with Geller, who is a judge in the American version, along with magician/illusionist Criss Angel and a rotating slate of celebrity guests. Considering he still attests to having supernatural powers, we were also more than a little curious about how he’s survived years of being lambasted by critics. TVGuide.com: For people who don’t know, can you explain exactly what it means to be a mentalist?Uri Geller: My definition of a mentalist is someone who can play around with your mind psychologically. Daisies' Dog, Phenomenon, Virtual CSI: NY

Lee Pace in Pushing Daisies by Scott Garfield/ABC

I now have a new favorite TV character this season, and it’s of the four-legged variety. Of course I’m talking about Digby, the stalwart and silent and absolutely gorgeous canine companion of Pushing Daisies’ life-affirming hero, Ned. This golden retriever was the first dead object (run down on a highway) to be revived by Ned as a child, and their attachment was one of the first and most persistent nitpicky complaints I fielded from the show’s naysayers. "How could Ned and Digby not have touched at least once over the years?" they wondered. A little boy and a faithful dog, how is it possible they restrained themselves from the heavy petting that comes so naturally in youth? My answer (beyond the obvious explanation that Pushing Daisies is a fantasy and we should just sit back and respect the rules we’ve been presented): Digby understands what’s going on. He knows that to be touched by Ned is to be sent to doggie heaven. He doesn’t need to be told. ... read more

"Magic"

I want to make out with this show. I want chill with it, get to know it a little better, and then make like awkward eighth graders at summer camp. Seriously, what is it about this show that makes me laugh so much? Even my roommate, a fellow Reaper lover who sits self-shackled next to me on the couch every Tuesday night, throws me questioning stares because I chortle obnoxiously at the tube every 15 seconds. So yes, I'm a huge dork. And according to the CW's ratings breakdown, I'm also one of the total four women who watch this show. Yeah, take that... all other shows. Yeah.I think the show is really taking off. This time I found myself not so concerned for the vessel or what it would be, as much as how all the shenanigans were going to go down. Whereas I once watched with suspicion, I now watch for fun. And I think that says a lot about the leaps it's made. Sam is getting comfy with his hunting prowess, is accepting his fate, and is slowly growing a pair. That last one in particular... read more

NBC at TCA: Meet the New Guy

The Singing Bee's Joey Fatone with The Honey Bees by Trae Patton/NBC Photo

He dropped names as diverse as Norman Lear, Uri Geller, Isaiah Washington and Jerry Seinfeld. He teased an all-celebrity version of The Apprentice (with a half-joking promise to extend an invitation to Rosie O’Donnell). In describing his vision for NBC's immediate and long-term future, the network’s boyish new co-chair Ben Silverman showed his affinity for both packaging and programming TV in an enthusiastic debut performance in front of the nation’s TV critics on Monday morning.Though he took the stage alongside the relatively subdued co-chair Marc Graboff, whose expertise is on the business side, this was Silverman’s show all the way, and he wasted no time in announcing some surprising programming deals and a few aggressive scheduling changes, including turning Monday into an all-fantasy night and shifting Friday Night Lights an hour earlier on Fridays, so it’s now cozily hammocked between the strong franchises of a relocated Deal or No Deal and Las Vegas,... read more

Rep Denies Diaz Made Criss Angel's Marriage Disappear

Cameron Diaz by Steve Granitz/WireImage.com

The lawyer for Criss Angel's estranged/"secret" wife, Joanna Sarantakos, claimed in court late last week that a romance between the "Mindfreak" and a Charlie's Angel was the last straw for the magic man's five-year marriage/15-year relationship. "We're naming Cameron Diaz as his lover," the New York Post quotes attorney Dominic Barbara as telling the court. "We will subpoena her as soon as she comes back to New York." Though Angel went to great lengths last month (including in this chat with TV Guide) to quell speculation about comments he directed at Diaz following a Times Square escape illusion, his lawyer is not denying the adultery allegation. On Monday, Diaz's rep issued a statement pointing out that the actress and Angel first met more than a year after he split from his wife, only went on four dates, and have no current relationship. Says the flack, "These are meaningless, attention-seeking attempts to unfairly and unnecessarily exploit Cameron's celebrity by trying to involve... read more

Diaz'd and Confused: Criss Angel Clears the Air

Criss Angel by Jemal Countess/WireImage.com

Saying that media interpretations of his Tuesday, apres-escape declaration of "love" for Cameron Diaz were "blown completely out of proportion," Criss Angel beseeched TV Guide to set the record straight. "I am a loving person. What do you want, I come from a Greek family!" he starts. "And Cameron is an amazing human being and, yes, I love her. I love my manager, I love the PAs that work for me. I always tell everybody I love them. The world needs more love. But the way it was interpreted was quite different.""Cameron is a friend," he continues, "and I love her like that. I've always said, 'Look at her, she's one of the most beautiful young women in Hollywood.' And look at me — what the hell would she want to do with me outside of being my friend? But my life could end tomorrow, and I just want to let people know who are important to me and that have supported me that I love them. That's truly what I meant but yet it's taken out of context." — Reporting by Joseph Hudak read more

Sweet Escape: Criss Angel Works His Magic on Diaz

Criss Angel by Jemal Countess/WireImage.com

Magic man Criss Angel is pulling out all the tricks to cast his spell on another Angel, Cameron Diaz, whom he is said to be courting. Upon completing a Tuesday promotional stunt — in which he extricated himself from a glass box encased in cement, dangling over Times Square — Angel dedicated the derring-do "to my girl, 'Trouble,' aka Cameron. I love you, baby." In a similar romantic gesture, I let my wife shower first this morning.UPDATE: Criss Angel asked TV Guide to help him "set the record straight" about what exactly he meant. See the TV Guide News Report for that story. read more

Cammy's Back!

That's right red-carpet lovers, Cameron Diaz has returned to her glowingly fabulous self and leaves her dark 'do behind with Justin Timberlake. I kid. Cam has told many a wonderer that the two are on good terms. But pish posh, breakup schmakup, the Shrek 3 star fights back in this adorable pink number and moves on with a refreshed look. Word on the street, er, strip is that Diaz is now linked with illusionist Criss Angel (please see my previous post for all things magically Angel), as they dined and partied in Las Vegas this past week. (A special thanks to my dear friend, Allie, who alerted me just as she heard the buzz around this alleged couple just to make sure I was in tune to my favorite Mindfreak's status.) Now, that's a relationship that seems to fit. They're both a little weird in a laid-back-but-entertaining way, right? Nevertheless, the long-legged actress shines again. Just remain aware around your new man, Cam, he tends to pull a trick from time to time. read more
