As the lead singer of an indie-rock band born and raised on punk music, there are times onstage when you want to grab people and shake them, walk on top of them, create an altogether uproar. But when you re also stuck behind the drumkit, that fire is a little bit harder to start. Still, it seems as though PAPA s Darren Weiss handles those urges just fine, judging from the live performance video of Young Rut, off their debut album Tender Madness. I want to make people salivate. I want their blood to boil, Weiss told Hive. Most of the records made by young bands today are so friendly, so safe, and so lacking character and guts. We want to make something that shakes that up. We don t want to be cute. We want to blow shit up. And while there are no explosives this time around, their performance at Los Angeles s iconic El Rey Theater is as restless, as propelling, as angst-ridden as Young Rut itself a track that captures that moment in every young rut s life when he realizes that it s just your turn to run to leave where you are, where you re comfortable, and start living. That personal freedom, or the insanity that comes with the lack of it, comes up a lot on the 12-track Tender Madness. Even without words, the impelling PAPA builds and builds until it almost physically pushes you forward, while Got to Move snowballs from merely pondering what it d be like to leave to saying, Fuck it, I might not ever come back. And it s something Weiss and Co. have had to do over and over again over the past couple years they ve been touring with the likes of the Cold War Kids and the Head and the Heart. I think through our experience of touring for the last couple of years, we ve had a pretty healthy dose of leaving things behind, and figuring out what things are worth holding onto, or worth fighting to hold on to, Weiss said. A lot of the time, to get what you want, you gotta lose what you got. Tender Madness is out now on Loma Vista..
