Gran Torino, in which he starred and directed, easily cruised into the top spot over the weekend with $29 million in its first weekend in wide release.

The debut intake trumps Eastwood's previous personal best of ...

Eastwood to Spike Lee: "Shut Your Face"

Clint Eastwood by Todd Williamson/WireImage.com and Spike Lee by Tony Barson/WireImage.com

Remember last month at Cannes when Spike Lee promoting his African-American WWII movie Miracle at St Anna made some characteristically aggressive remarks about the dearth of black characters in Clint Eastwoods Flags of Our Fathers Well the man who once played Dirty Harry has a few choice words for LeeA guy like him should shut his face Eastwood told the UKs Guardian newspaper apparently thinking that calling Lee a dummy head might sound childish Despite his obvious anger Eastwood gave a straightforward response to why there werent more black roles in his film The story is Flags of Our Fathers the famous flag-raising picture and they didnt do that If I go ahead and put an African-American actor in there peopled go This guys lost his mind I mean its not accurate Eastwood also claimed that Lee had once griped about Eastwood directing Bird the biopic about African-American jazzman Charlie Parker a story Lee thought should be told b read more

George Lucas Hails Maverick Filmmakers, Teases Indy 4

George Lucas

George Lucas is feeling good about television. In his life post-Star Wars franchise, the legendary writer, director, producer, special-effects czar and mega-mogul is still embracing his legacy — the far-far-away galaxy he created for six films that changed the cinematic universe and became a part of world pop culture. But now a new medium will bear the message. In a conversation with TV Guide executive editor Steve Sonsky that began with a discussion of Fog City Mavericks, a Starz documentary (premiering Monday, Sept. 24, at 9 pm/ET) about the history of San Francisco-based filmmakers like himself, Francis Ford Coppola and Clint Eastwood, Lucas also held forth on the status of his two read more

A Likable Host for a Long, Low-Key Oscars

The one thing I realized as Oscar night droned on and on for nearly four hours: If I ever had to choose someone to be stranded with for hours on end (say, like those poor Jet Blue passengers a few weeks ago), it would have to be Ellen DeGeneres.Keeping her cool, and her genuine aura of chipper goodwill, throughout three costume changes (in suits from red velvet to all-white to royal blue) and what seemed once again like an overindulgent excess of movie montages (we definitely could have done without Michael Mann’s fuzzy survey of cinematic American history), Ellen was welcome nearly every time she popped up. Offering a spec script to Martin Scorsese, directing Steven Spielberg on how to take her photo with Clint Eastwood, asking the megastars in the front row to lift their legs as she vacuumed the Kodak past midnight (ET), while informing us that Helen Mirren had just asked for a rum and coke (sounded pretty good to me at the time), Ellen did her darndest to deflate the bloat a... read more

The 2007 Golden Globes: All the Backstage Buzz!

Ugly Betty's America Ferrera and Salma Hayek

It's often said that the Golden Globes is the most fun and relaxed of all award shows, but does that prove especially true backstage, where reporters from around the world question the newly crowned winners? Indeed, unlike the red carpet, the press room is where inquiries can go beyond, "How excited are you?" But how far can the journos go? Read on to find out. 7:50 pm/ET: I have just left the red carpet, and I can't believe they are letting me meander so freely around the hotel. I see Steve Carell and his wife Nancy Walls; Naomi Watts fixing her hair; Michelle Trachtenberg coming in through the back door. It looks like the party is ready to begin. 8:14 pm: A coo read more
